issus clinton is a dud.

I could say she has all of bill clinton's baggage and none of his charm, except I don't find bill clinton charming. What she lacks, in my view, is lubricant. Snake oil. She grates.

It's more than simple dislike. You don't want to see her; and you definitely don't want to hear her.

Missus clinton is everyman's worst nightmare: ex-wife, fishwife, mother-in-law; worse, the abusive Nazi commandant in the Lina Wertmuller masterpiece. When she humiliates, which is always, she dons the sweaty tank undershirt, she grabs the whip.

The clintons understand this and are attempting to mitigate it with the following two-prong strategy:

1. The clintons are pushpolling to artificially jack up missus clinton's numbers; this is a relatively easy task, given a compliant press. This illusion of electability is intended to fool the voters, activate the herd mentality and ultimately fool the smart money, people like David Geffen and Harold Ickes.
   
   It won't work. Missus clinton has 100% name recognition. Any vote she doesn't already have, she won't get. Conversely, many voters have 0% information on the clinton abuses of power and utter failures. From this it follows that many votes she has today, she won't have tomorrow.
   

2. The clintons are conflating bill and hillary; "the clintons" become a single construct. Missus clinton arrogates the "bridge to the 21st century " as "theirs." And, by lifting the lyrics straight from Pinocchio, she becomes "the man from 'hope'."
   
   The danger here for missus clinton is that with the bridge and the hope come the abuses and the utter failures.

f mutability of meaning was necessary for the survival of the clintons--their survival hinged ultimately on the deconstruction of words and laws--it is more than a little ironic, and a manifestation of the special sway and shortsightedness of the pathologic ego, that clinton's monument to himself will necessarily define the clintons with the permanence of great inviolate places of iconic architecture.

Whereas a huckster removes meaning from institutions--the wife picked up where the husband left off--an architect encodes meaning in buildings. James S. Polshek, the architect with the dubious distinction of having been commissioned to build the William J. Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, believes that a successful architectural solution must necessarily be rooted in relevance.

Just as Polshek's buildings have physical layers, so too do they have layers of meaning. His Rose Center for Earth and Space, for example, is informed formally and programmatically by the historic architecture of a designated landmark even as it redefines itself, (often too self-consciously, in my view), in Star-Trekian terms. Reduced to its essence, the building is the nascent universe before the Big Bang, the promise of the undifferentiated cell in its mother's womb.

The "bridge to the 21^st century" was, perhaps, clinton's most delusional conceit, so it is not surprising that it would become clinton's self-referential metaphor of choice. His library was to be that bridge, if he had anything to say about it...

The architect is often the master of the inside joke, witness Robert Venturi's postmodern chairs. Venturi exploited--unabashedly and with abandon--the vocabulary of Las Vegas, its stage-set-as-reality and its roadside culture--bright, clashing, ugly and fake. The architect's inside joke is his hedge against the sycophancy that comes with patronage.

The flip side of the encoded meaning of the architect is the terrorist's decoding of it. To bin Laden, the World Trade Center was Jewish capitalism encoded in urban space. If Polshek's vision of clinton's library is a bridge, the inside joke is that, at best, it is a bridge to nowhere.

More likely, it is a bridge to the 7^th century...or a doublewide to house clinton double-speak. Take your choice.

l From is sounding the alarm.
"Unless we convince Americans that Democrats are strong on national security," he warns his party, "Democrats will continue to lose elections."

Helloooo? That the Democrats have to be spoon-fed what should be axiomatic post-9/11 is, in and of itself, incontrovertible proof that From's advice is insufficient to solve their problem.

From's failure to fully lay out the nature of the Democrats' problem is not surprising: he is the guy who helped seal his party's fate. It was his Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) that institutionalized the proximate cause of the problem, clintonism, and legitimized its two eponymic provincial operators on the national stage. The "Third Way" and "triangulation" don't come from the same Latin root for no reason.

That "convince" is From's operative word underscores the Democrats' dilemma. Nine-eleven was transformative. It is no longer sufficient merely to convince. One must demonstrate, demonstrate convincingly, if you will… which means both in real time and historically.

When it comes to national security, Americans will no longer take any chances. Turning the turn of phrase back on itself, the era of the Placebo President is over. (Incidentally, the oft-quote out-of-context sentence fragment alluded to here transformed meaningless clinton triangulation into a meaningful if deceptive soundbite.)

Although From is loath to admit it -- the terror in his eyes belies his facile solution -- the Democratic party's problem transcends its anti-war contingent.

With a philosophy that relinquishes our national sovereignty -- and relinquishes it reflexively… and to the UN no less -- the Democratic party is, by definition, the party of national insecurity.

With policy ruled by pathologic self-interest -- witness the "Lieberman Paradigm," Kerry's "regime change" bon mot (gone bad), Edwards' and the clintons' brazen echoes thereof (or, alternatively, Pelosi's less strident wartime non-putdown putdown)… and, of course, the clincher -- eight years of the clintons' infantilism, grotesquerie and utter failure -- the Democratic party is, historically and in real time, the party of national insecurity.

ASIDE: Pre-Howard Dean wartime Bush bashing, with its sotto-voce old-school indirection, refinement and politesse, sounds almost quaint.

The Democrats used to be able to wallpaper their national insecurity with dollars and demogoguery. But that was before 9/11.

Democrats' Shot At 2008 Win Looks Like Dud

How much of a beaten, beleaguered, hapless lot of lost pols are the Democrats after Tuesday's ballot box mugging?

Curly Howard didn't get slapped around as much by Moe as did this crowd of Gallup Poll panhandlers.

Good grief, the Washington Generals score more often against the Harlem Globetrotters.

But wait!

It gets worse.

The Iraqi air force had more bench strength than this party, which has about as much of a future at the moment as Yasser Arafat - only less so.

It's one thing to lose an election as John Kerry did.

It's quite another to look into your party's crystal ball and see that Ralph Nader has a better chance of getting elected to the presidency in 2008 than anyone claiming to be a Democrat.

If you were a Democratic Party honcho, which has to feel like presiding over a cootie convention, trying to figure out how to get this Elba of the electorate back on some semblance of viability has to be as daunting a task as rehabilitating Jack Kevorkian's image as a family doctor.

Where to start?

It's a small thing, really, actually more cathartic than anything else, but jettisoning party Chairman Terry McAuliffe, who comes off as the spokesman for the International Brotherhood of Henchmen, would be a tiny step toward restoring a scintilla of dignity to the Democratic cause.

After all, since he's presided over a political party's decline rivaling O.J. Simpson's fall from grace, McAuliffe has more than earned his place in political history as the ebola virus of the Electoral College.

Possible replacements?

Well, there's always former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, or perhaps recently unemployed Sen. Tom Daschle, who would seem to have the inside track since the Democrats wouldn't have to pay for moving expenses.

As for potential Democratic presidential candidates in 2008, the list is shorter than likely husband material for Ellen DeGeneres.

And what very, very few White House aspirants there are would hardly inspire anyone to start whistling the theme to ``Camelot.''

To begin with, can we please, please, please dispense with this Ezra Pound-like delusion that New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Eva Peron of Chappaqua, has any remote prospects to get elected to the presidency of the United States?

Really now, with the possible exception of Ted Kennedy, is there a more polarizing figure on the U.S. political scene than the Mary Todd Lincoln of the left?

Or put more simply: Charles Manson will win parole before the Typhoon Mary of managed care ever haunts the West Wing.

Why does Clinton enjoy a certain counterfeit political currency among the chattering class? Well, compared with the current crop of potential presidential candidates, to some the Kitten With a Tax Code looks downright Margaret Thatcheresque.

Certainly John Edwards can lay some claim to be the heir apparent, but four years between elections can either be a swell opportunity to put together a base constituency or a descent into more obscurity than the Sinclair Broadcasting Corp.

There are precious few others. Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh is young (49) and certainly would help the party reclaim Midwestern voters, as would Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsak.

The same logic holds true with North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley, 54, in trying to recapture a Southern constituency.

Still, it's abundantly obvious as the Democrats sift through the detritus of Tuesday's results that the dearth of leadership makes the PLO look like a pillar of transitional orderliness.

How bad is it? Howard Dean is probably looking to 2008 and practicing his primal scream.

Uh-oh.

Who in heaven's name is writing missus clinton's speeches? They make her sound like a cross between Pinocchio on Halcyon and a clueless tourist from Park Ridge, Illinois driving into Manhattan during rush hour. Oops.

In 2002, I wrote that the bridge to the 21st century was, arguably, clinton's most delusional conceit, that it overshot the mark by at least 1400 years.

To be fair, missus clinton's 19th-century reference is to that <yawn> retrograde 'retrograde Republicans' cliché, whereas my 7th-century reference is to the retrograde-in-fact islamofascist terrorists, whose jihadi declarations and acts of war against us the clintons willfully ignored for eight long years--allowing al Qaeda to grow exponentially in strength and reach, setting us up--very nicely, thank you--for 9/11 and its cataclysmic aftermath.
