Men whose masculinity is challenged become more inclined to support war or buy an SUV, a new study finds.
Their attitudes against gays change, too.
Cornell University researcher Robb Willer used a survey to sample undergraduates. Participants were randomly assigned feedback that indicated their responses were either masculine of feminine.
The women had no discernable reaction to either type of feedback in a follow-up survey.
But the guys' reactions were "strongly affected," Willer said today.
"I found that if you made men more insecure about their masculinity, they displayed more homophobic attitudes, tended to support the Iraq war more and would be more willing to purchase an SUV over another type of vehicle," said Willer said. "There were no increases [in desire] for other types of cars."
Those who had their masculinity threatened also said they felt more ashamed, guilty, upset and hostile than those whose masculinity was confirmed, he said.
You forgot the BARF ALERT
This "study" is hopeless twaddle.
So, if I "challenge" DH's masculinity, he'll suddenly be pro-war (he's on the fence, as always) and buy me an SUV? Cool!
Guys? Just how do I do that? ;)
Does this mean it was harder for the researchers to stick their fingers up their butts, or that they resisted "rimming"?
Conclusion of study: SUVs are EEEEVIL.
I only hope that taxpayer money was spent on this... that way I'll know it wasn't squandered on something like cancer research.
As to war, I don't care for it but somethings things need to be done.
As to my masculinity threatened, this joker doesn't know me very well, nor the type of family I come from.
Which was intended to be sarcasm...
Sounds like more liberal nonsense. Probably financed by taxpayer dollars. Grrrr! Think I'll drive out to the shooting range in my 4WD pickup with a gun rack in the back window. And the gays, they don't even cross my mind.
I heard Limbaugh talking about this "study" today. It seems we have one of two possibilities:
1. If their masculinity is challenged, males become more patriotic and want buy a suburban housewife's vehicle?
2. Someone "researcher" transferred their own biases and what they viewed as negative responses on to their subjects.
I wonder which it could be?
"Guys? Just how do I do that? ;)"
I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you. :)
I don't know, but when I told Der Prinz that the SUV he favored looked dainty and feminine, he decided to buy a truck instead :-).
The guys are relying on the stereotypical nonsense that masculinity is represented by aggression and/or low intelligence. The rediculous nonsense in these cultural stereotypes is what gets the funding.
Personally, I have no problem with homosexuals or even heterosexuals, so long as they are discrete in regard to their behavior.
oh...my....God! Did we pay for this tripe?
SUV? I thought a vette would be more appropriate. Aren't muscle cars penises in wheels?
So according to this report "secure" men drive the same type of cars as homosexuals?
