CHICAGO, IL, United States (UPI) -- To be hip in Chicago has reached the stage of laying out $135 for a single cocktail, or $700 for tea and cognac.

Jen Hansen, spokeswoman for the Le Passage lounge said the expensive cocktail known as a Champs-d`Elysees is only ordered about once a month, but it`s on the menu for those who feel the need for it.

The drink is made with Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac, Grand Marnier, orange juice and sour mix. It`s served in a crystal cognac glass rimmed with powdered sugar, and like McDonalds, the glass can be taken home by the consumer.

"People are spending $575 on a bottle of champagne here, so it`s not out of character for someone to spend this much," Hansen said.

Not to be outdone, the Park Hyatt Hotel also offers a mysterious blend of tea and cognac for $700, the Chicago Sun-Times said.

The scene: small town bar deep in the south.
The date: mid 1950's

4 black people walk into the bar.

Redneck says to the bartender: "you gotta serve them, it is the law".
Bartender: "yes, I know, but watch this"
"yes sir, what can I get you'll"
"We will have 4 rum and cokes"
"yes sir, thats $400"
"here you go"

Back at the bar, the redneck says "What are you going to do now?"

Bartender: "If they order another round, you poor white trash are going to have to leave".

Philistine! It's not drunk with a pink out, but sipped daintily with a relaxed wrist.

It's monopoly money -- expense account money -- that typically buys this stuff. A little over $100 for Louie Tres (as it's called) is not unusual. So, this price is not entirely out of line. What's moronic is mixing it with OJ...

Sour MIX???

My thoughts exactly. If you are using a mix, you may as well use everclear.

I once gave a cocktail waitress $360 in tips.
Las Vegas: cocktail waitress asked If I wanted a drink, I was at roulette wheel, winning big.
Ordered drink, she walked off, I told the dealer I was betting $5.00 on #9 for the waitress, it hit, she won $180, I re-bet the $5.00 on #9 for her, it hit again. Re-bet it a third time, it lost, I had the $360 ready for her, 14 $25 chips.
She brought my drink, I told her what I had done and I put the chips on her tray, she gave me a hug and a thank you so very much.
What did I care, it only cost me $5.00.

Yes I know and agree. My point was based on an observation I made a year ago. A local well known high end restaurant has been attracting the kind of clientel that screamed drug dealers and runners. This place always had a nice dress code, ambience and these questionable patrons were scuzzed out and beyond. Having to sit next to their table with their exposed body piercings, ashened faces and tattoos ruined my dinner. I've never gone back. Eventually that will kill off another good restaurant. And I'm not a snob by any stretch of the imagination. I pay not just for a good meal but the atmosphere too.

Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac

To mix that with anything is a sacrilege.

I've seen that happen in NYC. Usually when the restaurant has more reputation than customers. The last hooray phase...

What's the saying -- more money than sense? I think it applies.

Tea and cognac? ** shudder **

LOL, I forgot to mention while I was next to that table of scary patrons I found myself sliding my purse between my feet!!! Now that's really bad when a person feels that unsafe. Try to relax, enjoy a meal while holding a purse with your feet and glancing around nervously.

They have clubs in NYC that cater to that clientel. They'll go through cases of high end champagne every night.

As for your purse, you'd be surprised the types of restaurants where coats and purses are stolen...

Hmm, if they think that's expensive, try a Ginza hostess club. Blow $10,000 in one night.
