Target Resurrects 'Baby Got Back'

POSTED: 10:16 pm EDT August 2, 2005

NEW YORK -- Remember "Baby Got Back?"

It's back -- this time in a cleaned-up version being used by Target department stores to hawk back-to-school wares, like backpacks.

But wait, wasn't that song about the well-endowed female derriere?

Yes, but it now has a "G-rated" pedigree, thanks to some careful editing from the Target ad people.

Some might be put off by the campaign -- after all, MTV even barred the song during the daytime because of the rump-shaking women in the video.

But ad executives tell the New York Post the ad is a great idea because it targets parents who remember the song and are likely to have kids in school these days.

Old Navy started it this year by resurrecting the song, 'Bust a Move' and changed the words to sell summer tunics. The song became, 'Bust a Tune'.

Very true, it bothers me to hear Walmart trashed by "blue-staters" becuase Walmart does employ a lot of people.

Wal-mart's not bad at all . . . if you're trying to find old, fat, white trashy people!

They play the song at middle school dances. Nearly every kid knows it. I was at a friend's daughter's Bas Mitzvah recently and the kids were singing kareoke along with it.

It's become mainstream.

Do you know what one of the keys to advertising is? Repeat the product name several times. This is because generally once you repeat something to yourself 3 times it's commited to memory. A catchy song about sex does the exact same thing.

I'm willing to bet that whatever lyrics Target uses for its backpack ads, they don't use the word "sex" even once, much less three times.

"My daughter bought all her clothes in the boys dept at Gap."

I hope you got her permission before telling us this. (jk)

I saw this ad yesterday.

Can somebody explain to me why all the stores are trying to become hip-hop/rap oriented? Even Burger King now is joining McDonald's.

I don't get it. That won't really attract the youth like they think, and it will just turn off so many more (and I like some hip-hop occassionally).

I think it is marketing more geared towards the parents with a catchy song/tune that we recognize.

I feel so old and ut of the loop - I've got no idea what all the hoopla is .............. of course the nearest Target to me is more than 50 miles away and so I don't see any ads for it might have something to do with it :)

"Can somebody explain to me why all the stores are trying to become hip-hop/rap oriented?"

It's because they don't want my business anymore.

I'd have to see the ad to see the way's presented. Still the phrase 'baby got back' is pretty well known, I'm sure kids will figure that out.

How about an ad for Hanes atheletic wear: "I want your socks..."

"Sox are natural, sox are fun, sox are best when they're one on one . . . one on one . . . "

Good old creative editing, happens a lot. Carnival Cruise was using Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" for years, just cutting around all the lyrics about drugs and kinky sex, always gave me the giggles when the commercial came on.

I haven't seen those, but while trying to buy some normal underbritches for our girl, they had "bikini-style" and "hipster-style" (which were hip-huggers).

Marketed to girls as young as 4.

Don't forget the sweatpants with "Juicy" written on the back.

The perverts are still after our kids, but now they've come out of seedy alleys and dirty porn shops and instead have white-collar advertising/marketing jobs.
