OLDIE BUT GOODIE CSN TURNS HEADS (Shut Up and Play Your Damn Guitar)

OLDIE BUT GOODIE CSN TURNS HEADS By DAN AQUILANTE CROSBY, STILLS & NASH LOOKS are deceiving, espe cially when it comes to hip pie icons Crosby, Stills & Nash. Who would guess these old gray studs could come close to what they used to be? Yet at the Beacon Theatre Monday, at the first of their two-show engagement, the guys who sang the soundtrack to the turbulent '60s were made young again in a 2 1/2-hour set that showcased the best of their long career — from protest songs such as "For What It's Worth" to their close-harmony devotionals, including "Guinevere." The pre-intermission set was clearly the more difficult for the trio. In the song "Long Time Gone," there were more than a few off-kilter harmonies and the band had some difficulty connecting to the sedate, elderly audience. David Crosby, who is the walrus, thought he'd ingratiate himself to the fans with a few minutes of Bush-whacking, but instead he was heckled, and one patron even yelled, "Viva Bush!" The rattled singer reminded the politically offended that he had the microphone, telling them, "I can stand up here all night and say things about our s - - - - y president." Fortunately he didn't, finally letting go and getting on with the show. Crosby again slowed the early set with a snoozer song titled "Delta." He introduced the tune with a story of when he was wallowing in drugs and how Jackson Browne took him to the late Warren Zevon's house and forced Crosby to finish writing the tune.

Funny thing is, Stephen Stills is almost totally deaf. I saw him on some "entertainment" show last year and he played some of his "new" music. He sang way off key and his guitar wasn't even in tune. but he had no idea! It was hilarious.

Typical liberal entertainer attitude, wonder how much people paid to hear some loud mouth lecture them?

Around here we call them professors

I agree, they all suck even more so than Neil, as solo artists.

Yeah, he's the guilty one. It gets better, though. After the 'womyn' split up, a custody fight ensued and they went after daddy Crosby's deep pockets. Of course, he was happy to fling his DNA about for all sorts of purposes, but caring for his progeny isn't one of them - he fought tooth and nail.

When we all are on socialized medicine and the euthanasia centers are lighting up the night with crematorium fires, I look forward to these folks being dragged to the couch and drip machine sniveling and crying. I hope they pipe in the '60's tunes like 'Teach the Children Well' as their kids (or their genetic downstream) urge them to complete the 'cycle of life.'

I remember attending a CSN concert in Dallas the year that Crosby got out of jail for possession.

He thanked the cops for putting him away, saying that they returned his life to him.

Didn't take him long to lose it again, did it?

Clinton was a governor in 1991. Perhaps that would explain why there was no criticism of him.

Thanks for the correction on the paleo-rocksters. I used to know these things better but the mind gets a bit cloudy as the beard grows.

I don't blame him. He was just the "donor". It was there choice. It should've been between both the "guardian" and the maternal parent.

Not only that, but the "dikey singer" is Melissa Ethridge, something tells me that she doesn't need someone else's money to support her child.

None of those guys come close to NY as a solo artist.

Really? I once saw Steven Stills in New York! (Sucked! They all do!)

There must have been enough ambient pollutants at that show to alter my sense of time.

Must have been another year as I remember distinctly that it was during the Crinton regime that the show took place.
