So wonderfully Californian, Marsha Weidman's home has it all--along the beach, far from noisy traffic, with a Jacuzzi used to watch sunsets over the Pacific.

For this, she and her husband recently paid $1.05 million.

For that, they got a trailer, built in 1971, without any land.

A little trivia: George HW Bush lived in Compton when he was employed with one of the local oil companies in the late 40s/early 50s.

I used to know a guy who was raised in Willowbrook, which abuts Compton. He told me that both communities had laws on the books prohibiting blacks from moving in. When restrictive covenants were thrown out, the for sale signs went up immediately.

Hi Clemenza - NO, prices are sky-high here now. You can't even buy a small fixer-upper for under $400,000. I'm glad we bought this place 9 years ago when an ocean view was affordable. I'm looking at Catalina right now.

It really is a nice town. They're starting to fix up the waterfront area to attract passengers from the cruise ships, and that will be a BIG improvement from the bum heaven it had become down there. I do like this town!

Holy cow! We've CERTAINLY seen a change in that community, haven't we? NO ONE in their right minds (if they can afford to get out, that is....) would live there.

Coming from New York, San Pedro really stood out compared to the auto-centered sprawl that is southern California. It was pedestrian friendly and even had a pretty cool Greek grocery where I bought some Baklava on the way back to LAX.

Well, I recall GHWBush once made a deragotory comment about "Marin County Jacuzzi Liberals." I don't recall him saying anything about LA County conservatives.

Could've been. The Baklava was excellent, btw. Make sure to buy some Olive Oil if you go back, as Greek olive oil is the best in the world (this coming from a half-Italian American).

Better a condo in San Pedro/Redondo/Fairfax than a tract home in the hellhole that is the "inland Empire." I considered taking a job out in Century City at one point last year, but was concerned about where I would live.
