The local affiliate Fox 19 has just called the race for Jean Schmidt over Paul Hackett 52 to 48 percent.

The Channel 9 affiliate has called the race as well.

However, there are some warning signs for the GOP in this race. First of all, the Ohio GOP is still dominated by "moderates," including Governor Shaft, er Taft. Without a dynamic, conservative candidate for governor in 2006, thousands of Ohio Republicans will stay home on election day, and the party will pay the price. During my recent stay in the Buckeye State, the only candidate who seemed to energized the conservative base was the incumbent Secretary of State, Kenneth Blackwell. It was Blackwell who fought the libs over election issues last year, and he led the charge for the ballot measure that banned gay marriage in the state. Meanwhile, Shaft and his minions were running for the tall grass...
Don't worry too much about Hackett--he's done. Despite all that publicity, he still ran almost 5 points behind a very lackluster GOP candidate. With the advantages of incumbency, a heavily GOP district and sufficient ads on the Hackett "record," he'll lose by 7-10 points the next time around--if he bothers to run again.

The thing that worried me the most regarding this race were the problematic local issues that could have effected the outcome. That and the fact Hackett played the veteran card and hid his liberal credo fairly well. I agree that OH Rs could be in trouble this year but we need to hope for the best and OH needs to work its but off to overcome this disadvantage
Yeah, Zappa loved to say shocking and controversial things. But, I think he mostly believed what he said, knowing that his thoughts were unusual, to put it mildly. lol
On the other hand, he did name a kid Moon Unit, so how smart could he be? /jk

Zappa was definitely a thinker and not a sheeple or PC robot like today's 'stars'. I wonder if he gave his kids those bizarre names (Moon-unit and dweezle- IIRC) to give them a hard time with their names like he had with Zappa. Zappa won't be bad for them, because of his fame, ergo the first names for peer ridicule purposes. He probably considered ridicule a necessity for character and individualism. Just a crazy theory, but with Zappa there's no other kind. Musically there's no doubt he was a genius, even if of the truly odd type. Which historically speaking is almost a prerequisite.
Well at least they have found a stragegy for reducing their margin of defeat. (Bring in a military Vetran, don't mention the fact that you are affiliated with the Democratic Party and advocate staying the course in Iraq.)

Right. Someone on the tube today was saying this guy wrapped himself up in George Bush, meanwhile behind the scenes he was calling Bush every name in the book. Son of a b---h etc. Also they were saying the ads he ran never mentioned the fact that he was a DemocRAT. They thought the fact he was a war veteran was their ticket to sneaking this creep on through to a victory. How dumb do they think people are? I have two words for these sneaky RATS. John Kerry!
This is such great news and a renewal of the gloating from November 2004. I am alternately sickened and creeped out by this Hackett guy. I truly believe this was a trial Hillary tactic. Basically running on a huge lie.

A)We're pretty sure our guy is a transparent turkey, and we'll end up getting kicked right in the gizzard,
B) but we have PAC $$ to waste,
C) it's an "off" year
D) We need to "means-test" a campaign 'strategory' for an upper East coast Jr. Senator,
E) our guy is a recent vet, so we hope to look courageous by association, and
F) judging from our huge Ohio loss in '04, we obviously need to practice our voter fraud techniques much more effectively.
Undocumented aliens, convicted felons, homeless/transients, and the dead need to vote earlier and even more often.
