Being pro-life used to mean, at a minimum, that you believe life begins at conception and that this life is worthy of protection at all stages of development. Sen. Bill Frist would like to "modify" that just a bit.
First, a little background. On August 9, 2001, you'll recall, President Bush announced a compromise. He would allow federal funding of embryonic stem-cell (ESC) research. But he restricted this government support to the 78 or so ESC lines that had already been created as of that date, "where the life and death decision has already been made." Thus, Bush said that the government should not encourage, nor should taxpayers pay for, research that involves the destruction of human life. At that time, Frist, who is a heart- and lung-transplant physician, announced he would support the policy.

It's dangerous to ever trust a politician completely, regardless of their stated "principles". Hitlery will be running as a born-again Christian, if she thinks that will get her votes. Frist may be vying for that elusive "middle ground". He'll lose way more than he'll gain
I guess she figures if she can only fool about 2% of born again Christians, she can win.
Can anyone explain why funding ESCR would make any sense even if one didn't regard embryos as being 'human life'? Other forms of stem-cell research show much more promise, and would seem to have much more practical application (after all, if a patient receives tissues generated by cells from his own body, the tissues are going to be a perfect genetic match). So what's the purpose of ESCR, other than to (1) be a money sink, and (2) try to justify abortion?
Frist is a major disappointment.....can anyone be trusted?
Frist family holdings include hospitals. Perhaps he's hoping to cash in on research dollars.
Maybe...Dubya's been pretty good so far!

Frist is a politician. WHO is he pandering to? Follow the trail of votes and power....
I have no idea what Frist's motives are for this reveral, but I am sure of one thing. He has killed any chance that he might have had to be the Republican nominee for President.
Stone dead. He can forget it!
...just still reeling from Frist's bald-face, smugly arrogant I know better than you, absolutely appalling & sneaky flip on LIFE!
Follow the MONEY...
Perhaps he's going through some sort of mid-life crisis...Pity about the political suicide!
Too bad he didn't buy a motorcycle instead :^
btw, I see you're from Melbourne.....
..I'm from Melbourne too...the other Melbourne.
The problem begins with the making of the multiple embryos in the first place.
#15..so true.
Hello to a fellow Melburnian. I'm betting it's a bit warmer in your city than ours right now...
There are FReepers who support ESCR and consider themselves pro-lifers.
I'm uncertain why a couple cannot request only one embryo at a time.
I'd bet the technlogy is easily available.
