I love the smoking ban in Hennepin County (Minneapolis) here.
When I go out to the bar after work, I can do so without being in a cloud of smoke.
My clothes no longer smell like I've been sleeping in an ashtray.
My lungs feel better too.
These smokers can step outside and have a cancer stick if they want to. Many bars have set up a small area where smokers can go if they want to light up.
OPEN YOUR OWN BAR....................
Who are you to dictate who an owner serves? do you demand the menu and prices conform to your personal likes?
"My clothes no longer smell like I've been sleeping in an ashtray."
There is the crux of these phoney laws.
Grats on your swell feeling lungs, hows your liver?
:p
If taverns and nightclubs would go smoke-free, according to the busybodies' logic, they'll gain more customers, right? So...why aren't business owners opening up smoke-free establishments then?
Let the free market decide, instead of special-interest busybodies who con local governments into banning smoking.
I also live in Minneapolis, and I admit that it is nice to be able to go out and not have to immediately take a shower and do laundry when I get home.
However, I am still against smoking bans in principle; bars and restauarants should be able to set their own policies, and customers can decide whether or not they want to patronize a business based on its smoking policy. Plenty of places banned smoking before they were required to by law.
I suppose you were happy when that lying idiot Pawlenty got his tax increase passed as well.
Yeah, there's nothing like inflicting your own personal tastes onto everyone else, at government gunpoint. I mean, you used to be able to start a non-smoking business before, or convince a business owner to cater to nonsmoking customers before the ban, but no, it's much easier to ban all smoking establishments, and then you can go wherever you wish, and enjoy the smoke-free air. Well, at least while they remain in business.
Next thing you know, government will mandate that you eat vegetables, exercise, and cut down on the sweets. It's good for you, just like quitting smoking is. You'll just love those intrusions into your life, it you like the smoking ban. And don't worry, next year we've got tooth-brushing and floss monitors scheduled as well. And even better things for the future!!
Comrade.
I put my coat on to go out for a smoke when it is 20 degrees out...I just keep going and get in my car and go home. I can't take my drink oustide with me, and it's 20 degrees.
I'm outside having a smoke and I have to listen to you whinny non-smokers complaining that you have to wade through the smokers to get in the place too.
I had heard some grumbling that the law may change here in Hennepin because of the loss of revenue (i.e. taxes) for the city (since they could care less about bar owners).
As a former smoker, I enjoy the clear air as much as the next, but still say that every bar has the right to decide if its a smoking bar or not. If the person doesn't like the fact that a bar is a smoking bar, go find one that isn't. Works the other way too.
remember this post when you favorite bar closes...
It was a real eye opener when they were still discussing just a Minneapolis smoking ban.
Several times the local media played a clip of a Hennepin County official walking along the street stating how unfair it would be if people could just walk across the street into St. Louis Park and smoke in a bar or restaurant there.
It hit me like a thunderbolt, this is how liberal Totalitarianism starts; the liberal politicians pass laws that the people dont like, and then they wont allow the people any possibility of choice.
Thus it went from a Minneapolis City smoking ban to a Hennepin County ban, because it would be unfair for the people to have a choice. Liberal Totalitarianism at its finest!
I'm kind of a hypocrite with these rules. I personally oppose such rules and would never vote in favor of them.
However, I can't say that I didn't enjoy going out to bars in smoke-free NY and LA.

I personally got laid off from my bartending job @ the Bloomington Bennigan's in Minnesota. I've been there almost 10 years (I'm 27 right now). Just built a new house with my wife last year, and now the commies take 2500 a month out of my budget. Unbelievable.
The Mall of America is down 35'ish %, while many other bars have simply closed up shop. Layoffs, reduced hours, etc. Why?
You can't count on non-smokers for your day-in-day-out business. Percentage-wise, smokers drink more. This isn't rocket science, folks.
The good news: I'm told, however, that Hennepin county is on the verge of adding the 50-50 clause; if you sell 50% or more of your sales from liquor, NO BAN. I wonder if I can get my job back?
Luckily, I have a third job... as a local rockstar:

Capitalism- Gotta love it.

Gosh Steve, guess this was all about you wasn't it? No matter how much we smokers have compromised with you folks over the past 25 years, it still wasn't enough for you was it?Ignore private property rights, just get your clean air!
So tell me Stevie, when you aren't there to make up for the smokers who have been banned, who is taking up your slack? Furthermore, how are the neighborhood bars where the poor folks who could care less about second hand smoke and your elitist attitudes doing Stevie?
Yes sir Stevie, you and your ilk are certainly doing these neighborhood pubs a real big favor aren't you???
FWIW Stevie, drop by the bar I hang out in sometime and lets discuss your issues with smoking. I won't kick your a$$ but everyone else in the bar will.....................
How would you feel about a tiny area, well-ventilated, set up for people who don't want to inhale second-hand smoke? Would you feel all alone and discriminated against?
Until some legislature has the guts to outlaw tobacco smoking, this amounts to pure and simple discrimination, based on someone's lifestyle. And if they can outlaw smoking in private businesses, how long before they decide to outlaw drinking beer in your private residence? Or farting in public? Or wearing white after Labor Day?
I hope the absurdity of this approach is not lost on you.
Drink up fast we're coming for the drunks next. I hate the smell of drunks, it makes everything smell like gutter vomit with a touch of urinal. When I go into a bar I want to do nothing.
Well, I was going to respond to your posting, but it looks like it's already been covered several times.
Nicely, I might add, by smokers and NON smokers.
