Washington, D.C.-Senator Norm Coleman today submitted a statement into the Congressional Record denouncing a final report issued by the United Nations' Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG) suggesting that the U.N. assume global governance of the Internet. Since its inception and creation in the United States, the U.S. has assumed the historic role of overseeing the Internet's growth and has overseen its development. The U.N. taskforce report suggests that in addition to terminating the U.S.'s leadership role, the authority and functions of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a non-profit organization overseen by the U.S. Department of Commerce, should be transferred as well. Senator Coleman strongly opposes these measures.

" U.N. assume global governance of the Internet."
THAT would be ceding the ultimate information control to the enemy of mankind! Worse than bookburnings.
Perhaps we ought to ask the inventor of the Internet, Al Gore for guidance.
2006 political issue.
Democrat running for office: "I believe that the UN should not have control of the internet."
Masses of sheep: "Clap clap clap clap"
Bwahahahahahahah The UN controlling the internet Bwahahahaha. Put Kojo in charge.
well I do believe that Coleman is a Republican....
Once the switch is made back to 'hollow-log' technology... they have my vote.
Forgive an ignorant question. But how is it that any one country controls the internet? I hadn't know that America controlled the 'net.
Interesting comment from Kofi yesterday regarding the appointment of Mr. Bolton. He stated, in effect, that Mr. Bolton would be welcomed as long as he agress to a "give and take" philosophy.
Kofi knows. He takes.
Now what do you think control of the Internet is worth?
Pay us with the money we give them?
LOL, the UN doesn't "pay" for ANYTHING.
Other than that its a great plan.
I want to know if any Dem Senator (or Representative) has gone on record as being for the UN taking over control of the Internet...anyone know?
ICANN controls the root (DNS) servers, which control all DNS on the Internet. Technically you can operate web sites by IP address alone, but mail servers require DNS.
Drudge's report is a short and IMPORTANT read. The UN has wanted for some time to control the use of the internet, and the dissemination of information. This looks like a first step in that direction.
Thanks, Will, for this information.

And is ICANN controlled by the US?
Nope, the big mouths moved too fast, the dems didn't have time to demonize the internet before they tried to take over. You know, the way the SUV has been demonized.......etc..
Yes. It was started here, it includes a number of international figures (heads of companies) on its board, but it's US-owned.
