USS Carl Vinson Arrives in Norfolk (WELCOME HOME! Have tissues ready)

NAVAL STATION NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) arrived at its new homeport of Naval Station Norfolk July 31, after completing a seven-month trip around the world.

Carl Vinson Sailors embarked on a journey that took them from their Naval Station Bremerton, Wash., homeport into the Persian Gulf for a four-month deployment, then to their new home at Naval Station Norfolk. Carl Vinson’s arrival in Norfolk accomplished the final leg of a homeport shift to Norfolk for a scheduled 36-month Refueling Complex Overhaul (RCOH).

“We’re absolutely thrilled to have the Vinson here,” said Capt. Lloyd Pyle, commanding officer of Naval Station Norfolk. “We’re delighted to have a team of warriors back.”

The Sailors aboard the ship were noticeably enthusiastic about their arrival in Norfolk.

“I’m stoked. I’m so excited,” said Aviation Structural Mechanic Airman Samuel LoGiudice.

Carl Vinson and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 launched more than 6,500 sorties, totaling more than 20,000 flight hours, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and maritime interdiction operations since relieving the Naval Station Norfolk-based USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) March 19.

The ship will spend nearly two thirds of the RCOH in dry dock to accomplish planned repairs. This period will also be used to install the latest technologies in computer software, combat systems, propulsion controls and aviation support.

The RCOH is scheduled to begin in November.

Wonderful! I know you are so excited! Actually, we are returning home. Hubby and I met, married and had our first four children here before he took orders to WA. It sure is beautiful out there. I love it here, too...except the traffic. Wow, 64 has only gotten worse.

Welcome to Hampton Roads! Be aware, in this area, Hampton Roads is really a waterway, and all the roads are really parking lots.

I was in Virginia Beach for 5 days last week (our nephew's wedding)...wish I could have seen the Vinson return! My husband and I met in VB 33 years ago, when he was at Damneck, and have been married for 30 years!

Enjoy having your hubby home again!

Indeed!!
My oldest was born at the Naval Hospital in Bremerton. How is it out there? I can still remember where most things are in Silverdale. At least I hope a lot of the same stuff is still the same.

We joke that we must love Islands and Peninsulas. We moved from Kitsap Peninsula over to Hampton.

We came over from Washington for the USS Nimitz. They were the first aircraft carrier to go through the major overhaul.

Are you on the Southside or the Peninsula?

SandRat isn't moving here.
It looks like v1hebrews11 is finally back in our area again.

Hampton Roads is a nice place to live. No complaints. I don't even mind the traffic. Driving around in LA taught me to appreciate even the traffic dramas here.

We lived on the Alameda NAS during the Korean War. My little sister was born in the base hospital. I went to kindergarten at Mastic School in Alameda. My teacher was Mrs. Mathews. I remember because we were from Wisconsin and I was a Milwaukee Braves fan and their 3rd Baseman was Eddie Mathews. I remember asking Mrs. Mathews if she was Eddie's Mom!

It is sad to see old military bases deteriorating. All of the greed of the developers pushing for them to be deactivated, followed by nothing.

Really? Our youngest two were born there. We lived on Bangor in Silverdale. I really liked it there. We went to church all the way out in Port Orchard...it was so worth it. I loved going to Seattle once in a while. My husband and oldest daughter (the one seen hugging him) were at the Mariner's game where they won 115 that season. We still kick ourselves for never seeing Mt. Saint Helens, though. We have too many wonderful friends not to go back for a visit. Maybe someday...
