I miss Sam Chinita. The "Cuban" places that have opened in recent years are typically owned by Anglos and are what Floridians call "South Beach Cuban" ie not very authentic and strictly for tourists.
I lived in Miami for three years and miss the 24 hour Cuban luncheonettes where I would get shrimp creole, tostones, beans and rice for $8 at 3AM.

Used to be a Cuban/Chinese place over on -- I think it was 9th and 14th (????) a diner type set up. Excellent.

I've always been cash poor. Its amazing how when I was looking for places in the Bronx how the landlords tried to rip me off. Typically, I would pretend to walk away and then they would negotiate.
I lived at 189th and Belmont surrounded by old Italians, Albanians, Dominicans, and the early stage Mexicans. It was an interesting experience to say the least.

That was Sam Chinita. La Chinita Linda was two blocks away.

A lot of the problem with that is in many areas you simply cannot build big new buildings. Normally if there was much new demand buildings would go up and up. But in our cities the no-growthers won't allow it.
So we have poor people crammed into tiny apartments with many other poor people.

I know that you were joking, but you are not that far off the mark as far as other ethnic groups are concerned. My ex-girlfriend's dad went from Peru to Toronto, established residency, then came down to NYC and brought his family from Lima.

Yeah, that sounds right...
I used to like going to to Washington Heights on a saturday. Guys out on the street selling raw sugar cane and cooking turtles crawling around in cardboard boxes. Perhaps the best ices in NYC. Shaved ice off the block with fantastic flavors they'd pour on...

What strikes me as interesting -- and not to disrespect your feelings on the issue -- but the immigration thing doesn't have a lot of resonance in NYC. There is always some new group coming in...

I have a feeling that when Castro falls it might be the cure to many of our immigration woes.

Maybe in NYC, but when 40 illegal Mexicans move into the house next door on Long Island etc....

Apparently the states were controlling immigration through around 1900 or so.... I am sure can find the exact dates

From news reports and speaking to people -- it's a big deal. And, it's probably closer to what the rest of the country is experiencing as opposed to NYC.

I'm not sure about that. I'd love to find out if it's true, and what changed.

We do have to watch our south.
Hugo Chavez of Venezuela is in play. He wants to hold sway with Latin American politics.
He's making nice-nice, dealing with anti-American countries world wide, while he brings in Castro's henchmen and tightens the noose on Venezuelan freedoms.
