The First Coast's 2006 state Senate primary between Jim King and Randall Terry is 15 months away, but fast becoming a bellwether race. At the very least, there is increasing national interest in how such a conservative core of the state defines conservatism, how powerful the religious side of the party continues to be and how big of a tent has been built by the GOP.
Former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator and New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman is among the national figures diving into the debate.
"This is precisely the type of race I'm interested in, because it's a good, moderate incumbent who's not in trouble with the electorate but from people who say he's not Republican enough," said Whitman, who has offered King campaigning and fund-raising help.
"I don't think my race is going to define the Republican Party, but conceptually that's the right track," Terry said. "To me, the question is if the party is going to be the party of Ronald Reagan or Christine Todd Whitman. Those are not the same party."
King in recent years he has played key roles in major debates among Florida Republicans that may have divided the support beneath him. In 2003, while Senate president, he led a chamber that bucked Gov. Jeb Bush by refusing to support any medical malpractice lawsuit cap beneath $500,000. The result was a summer-long political stalemate and still-simmering debate about fiscal conservatism.
A second wound came this past spring during the Schiavo episode.
Former state party Chairman Tom Slade of Jacksonville said King's gains for Northeast Florida are more than long enough to overcome lingering resentment.
Slade said. "If that wild-eyed nut can beat him I'll be shocked, disappointed and wondering if this is a party I want to identify with."

Where's the third choice? None of the above?
How did I miss this article?
Christine Todd Whitman may help King campaign! Really must read the whole article. The Duval GOP wants to stay in the middle, not be "too" conservative.
There still might be other candidates to enter the race before the filing deadline.
If the dems are smart they'll pick a conserative candidate to go against the district 8 Pub. Lots of people have said they'd rather not vote than put King back in office.
New bumper sticker.
((((PING))))
BOOKMARKED.
He voted to kill Terri. I'd say he's not only republican enough but he's dangerous.
Here's the pack of RINOS in the Florida Senate who voted against Terri's life. Remember, Terri was alert and aware of her surroundings and breathed on her own. She was murdered by state sponsored homicide and the RINOS pictured are directly responsible.
ALTHOUGH MANY LEADERS IN TALLAHASSEE WERE INVITED to, nobody visited Terri. In a life or death matter, that would have been an appropriate measure. (I hate rinos).
Takes an awful lot of 'guts' to advocate for, and then justify, cold-blooded murder.
Unfortunately, the Judges and politicians stuck together and did not waiver in their pursuit to make sure that Terri would be killed. J. Greer "the law of the case is that she will die."
The third time was a charm because they had all their euthanazi ducks in a row. The Pope begged the United States to save Terri on a daily basis. Royalty from other countries begged the United States to save Terri.Millions of people from around the world and in the U.S. begged for Terri life which was supposed to be inalienable!
Florida is the starvation state until further notice. That is Jim King's legacy - as is being inducted into the Hospice Hall of Fame. Lots of home runs, eh, Jimmy?
And one look at Jim King's picture and bio was enough to send up all my flags: the guy is a slimy opportunist weasel whose biography reeks of flim-flam operations.
The only reason he's a "Republican" is that's the dominant party in Florida now. Thirty years ago, the guy was a Democrat, no doubt about it.
He's cheap scum who couldn't have cared less about a woman's life - especially if it got in the way of money for his buddies.
Randall Terry may be too "controversial" to take him down. But it is really, really good to see that someone is making King sweat. He knows if he loses his position, he's nothing but a fat shyster, probably looking at a bartending job for the rest of his life.
Sounds like you were so fixated on Terry that you missed everyone else.
One of my favorites is Monsignor Malonowski. He was allowed to visit Terri and he held mass there outside of Hospice Woodside, the hospice from hell.
8mmmauser, did Randall Terry look to be on camera at Hospice Woodside? What is your recollection?
However, when Jesse Jackson showed up a few times in a stretch limo, that was grandstanding. He even met with Jeb and they were on CNN together, like old friends. That was a sickening photo-op from Jeb's office.
I think that Jim King did an inside poll and he's polling badly with women. They probably think he's heartless and they are right.
The primary is in September of 2005. King's a dangerous fat cat.
Why, everyone knows that good ole susie talks about ten times as fast as she thinks.
she is dead because none of the men in her family had the $&&@s to stand up and fight for her. The rinos deserve to be treated with contempt, but the men in her family are beneath contempt.
Jake
Jim King voted to kill Terri Schiavo and you cannot dispute it. Terri's just as deceased as those old men except that she was tortured before she was murdered. RINOS did it.
suzie could go to Gitmo to interrogate detainees. They'd spill the beans just to get her to finish a sentence. That's torture.
Don't blame the men who are Terri's blood relatives.
BLAME MICHAEL SCHIAVO who gamed Florida's sytem and he's having trouble getting a publisher. MICHAEL SCHIAVO is responsible with the RINOS, crooked judges and lawyers for Terri's murder. MICHAEL SCHIAVO, HINO.
MICHAEL SCHIAVO hooked up with corrupt Florida to get Terri starved and dehydrated to death.
