Yankee Lefty Might Pitch to the Right
U.S. News- Washington Whispers ^ | 08/01/05 | Paul Bedard

Lefty pitcher Al Leiter is the toast of New York, now that he's left the Florida Marlins to help the Yankees in the pennant stretch. The Yanks think the 39-year-old with a winning record will help solidify a muddling rotation. But insiders say that's not the only reason he headed north. Republican tipsters say he's mulling a political bid in his adopted state or back home in New Jersey. GOP-ers say he has helped at recent Republican events and is up on current issues. He has even been featured as GOP "dude of the week" on the New Jersey Republican Party Web page. "Oh, he's one of us," says a Republican tipster: "A conservative."

that's no secret. I've heard this many times before. I know as a Met that he, Piazza, and Bobby Valentine were all GOP fans.

I had a lower box seat for Leiter's Yankee (re-)debut at Fenway. Quite impressive, such command of several pitches, kept the Sox hitters off-balance. I'd say he pitches intelligently. Don't know why he'd been lousy before that night.

If he retires after this year he'd be a good one to run for Senate in 2006

So Al's got a couple great things going for him; he's a Republican and a Yankee! The sun's shining sweetly on our Al.

Are you a lefty?

Or, failing that, Japanese?

Have you recently been released?

Then join the pitching staff of the New York Yankees!

We just won't give you the millions we're paying hacks like Jaret Wright.

Jaret Wright is great. Of course I just stepped out of a time machine from 1997. What's new in the last 8 years? :^)

Unfortunately, he's a Bloomberg fan....

Leiter's ongoing connection with Mayor Bloomberg was also on display Tuesday. Leiter was a key part of Bloomberg's run for office in 2001, and spoke at the mayor's inauguration ceremony in Times Square on New Year's Eve 2002.

He supports GWB, our troops and the war on terrorism ~ that's enough for me ~ I'm a positive about life, not negative.
