Our prisons are fertile ground for cultivating suicide bombers

TWO OF Britain’s bombers, Richard Reid and Muktar Said-Ibrahim, converted or reconverted to Islam in prison. This is a very small number, of course, but as we have just seen, it does not take large numbers of such people to effect a huge change in a country’s atmosphere. And the omens for the emergence of more of them are not good.

First, the number of Muslim prisoners has risen sixfold over the past 15 years. With more than 4,000 such inmates they make up 70 per cent of prisoners from minority groups. They are mostly of Pakistani descent, and the relative absence of people of subcontinental origin who follow other religions is equally striking.

Secondly, Islamic proselytising is prevalent in our prisons. An outside observer might conclude from the religious literature that he sees there that Britain is more an Islamic than a Christian country. I was often surprised on entering a cell in the prison in which I worked to discover a booklet with a title such as The Basic Teachings of Islam. More often than not, this will be the prisoner’s first experience of reading abstract principles.

Islam has an uncanny appeal to criminals in our prison system. How come?

Maybe because they are loners and being in prison can be very tough on someone alone.  The muzzies offer them friendship, guidance and protection.

Is there a word missing in the title, like maybe it should be "Why Are Convicts...."

The title seems to ask a question and not answer it.

Very good point.  It's a good question but the title is misleading.

Therefore, profiling should not be used ... /bs

Or at least it seems to suggest that the article will give some reasons for why prisoners are susceptible.
And it really doesn't

>Why convicts are susceptible to the lure of radical Islam

Well, something tells me
that Islam might be getting
a makeover soon!

I think this is the actual title. The one above is a subtitle.

I think Islam, like many religions, has a certain appeal to the downtrodden, the unfortunate, people who have bad luck, prisoners, and others who feel they are getting the shaft, whether it is real or perceived. I'm not making excuses for prisoners, they should do their time if they did the crime, but when someone is in a situation like that, many of them can be open to such ideas and religions that hold the promise of making their lot in life better as well as provide hope for life here on Earth and beyond. Some faiths like Christianity or Judiism can provide an inner hope and provide a good path to salvation and better living whereas Islam, at least from what we have seen, provides a way to hopefully impose their idea of better living on the world by force and provide a paradise in the afterlife. That's the best way I can explain it.

It all boils down to the idea that the criminal is the "victim" of an unjust society and islam makes a good n excuse for their predicament.

The entire religion is based on the historical facts that Mohamed wanted to be in charge of Mecca, they pitched his sorry ass out, he got a bunch of criminals to back him up and he took over the city. The deal worked so well, that they spread it out from there.

Power. The convicts have none (due to their own behavior),and want to blame this on society at large.

According to another article, arresting bombers causes more bombers. So the liberal weenie answer would be to let all the criminals out of prison and not arrest bombers.

Yeah, right.

None of the mass murdering Islamists had ever been to prison.

Should the headline have read ......?

"Our mosques are fertile ground for cultivating suicide bombers".

Or
"Our tax payer supported immigrant population is a cultivating center for suicide bombers"
