RALEIGH (AP) - An editor and two reporters at a small North Carolina newspaper resigned Thursday after the writers were accused of inventing quotes published on the front page of their newspaper.
Jeff Sykes said he resigned as managing editor Thursday afternoon. He apologized to The Reidsville Review's subscribers in a column published Thursday.
Reporters Brook R. Corwin and Michael Pucci also resigned, he said. Corwin and Pucci invented quotes in May for the daily "Two Cents Worth" feature, which includes a small picture of a person, along with their name and response to a question.
Sykes said he learned of the deception earlier this month. He said he verbally disciplined both reporters, but now believes he made a mistake by not immediately firing them. "I was trying to be compassionate," he said.
One of the people quoted in "Two Cents Worth" was an acquaintance of the fired staffers who said she had never been to Reidsville or been interviewed by a reporter from the paper.
The News & Record reported that several of the photographs used in the Review were identical to photos posted at thefacebook.com, a college social networking Web site.
Corwin had been with the newspaper for 10 months and Pucci joined the staff in January, said Sykes, who had worked in Reidsville for three years.
The town is about 25 miles north of Greensboro. The newspaper publishes five days a week and has a circulation of 5,195.
Integrity in journalism!
Anyone that believes anything written in a newspaper deserves what they get. I can't read a Letter-to-the-Editor without wondering which relative of the editor or publisher wrote it, cause you know yours and mine and all the others that weren't written on DNC letterhead were thrown out with yesterday's trash.
Did they study with Jayson Blair?
It would be interesting to know what the fake quotes were. Was there something political in them? I am assuming not, otherwise they would have mentioned that.
Ho-Hum. Unfortunately this has become the standard in news media, from behemouths like the NYT and CBS, right down to the local small town paper.
Too lazy to go out and report on news and events, it's easier for them to sit in their office and make it up, and slant it whichever way they want it to read, to make their point.
Credibility of 'The News' is rapidly approaching zilch, just about everywhere.
"It would be interesting to know what the fake quotes were."
I had the same thought. You have to understand that if the media wont print them, there's a reason why. It's just like when the AP or Reuters prints a story "POLITICIANS ACCUSED OF VOTE FRAUD"...they wont tell you the party, so you KNOW it's a DemoCommie!
Think about how many years upon years upon years these lying traitors have been doing this?
bttt
Hmm...it looks like the quote was about an individual saying that the Dave Matthews Band was her favorite. This is also from the AP
"N.C. newspaper probes quotes' sources"

With the Internet, I am very surprised they can still sell newspapers and make a profit.
They could contact the New York Times for a job since they are probably looking for a couple of more liars.
