WEST UNION The political rhetoric continued to fly during a congressional debate held at the Ohio Valley Vocational School near West Union on Tuesday, July 26.
Democrat Paul Hackett continued to label Republican Jean Schmidt as a "rubber stamp" career politician, while he relies much on his military service in Iraq to win the congressional election on Aug. 2.
Schmidt reiterated her experience as a politician, her pro-life views on abortion and a comprehensive energy policy to win the seat in congress.

One of my good friends lives in this district. Until two days ago, he was confident that Schmidt (the Republican) would win. Now he thinks Hackett may. It would be a stunning blow for a Democrat who called President Bush "a son of a b*tch" to win in a district that Republicans have won with over 70% of the popular vote for decades.

"Now he thinks Hackett may."
Any actual evidence to back up his change of mind?

He has three pieces of evidence. First, he's seeing more Hackett lawn signs than Schmidt law signs. Second, he says the GOP is pouring $500,000 into last-minute campaign spending, which is a huge sum for a race that everyone once thought was in the bag. Third, he believes that Hackett would not have told USA Today that he thought the President was an "SOB" unless he had polling numbers that showed his schtick was working.

The $500,000 may just be an indicator that the Republicans have money to burn. And the "SOB" comment is more likely a reflection of a candidate that isn't serious, rather than a good campaign device.

I'm not voting for Hackett. Even if the ghost of Chesty
Puller comes back and says I should vote for a brother
Marine.
My G_d, he does everything but have "The Marine Hymn"
playing in the background in his commercials.

If Hackett wins, the pundits will say this signifies a huge trend towards the Democrats in next years' elections. But, the pundits are too predictable. They're also mostly Democrats.

I don't doubt that Jean Schmidt leaves a lot to be desired as a candidate, but there's a lot of chatter on the leftie blogs that an Ohio anti-tax group is urging Republicans not to turn out to vote.
Is this true?

In thought it was the Club for Growth running ads for Republicans to stay home and let the Democrats win the open seat.
To: Heatseeker
COAST, a well-known anti-tax group in southwest Ohio, is reportedly doing these "don't vote" messages.

I have never understood the logic of this strategy. Do these groups really want to give Nancy Pelosi another vote in the House?

Neither do I. It makes only sense to run such ads in a primary.
