One of the biggest names in the history of Arizona politics is joining the 2006 race for governor.

For discussion purposes:

One of the biggest surnames, actually.

Republican Party activist Don Goldwater, a nephew of the late U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater, confirmed Friday he will seek his party's nomination to challenge Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano.

Goldwater declined to elaborate in advance of news conferences planned for Tuesday in Sun City West, Phoenix and Tucson. Goldwater's candidacy was reported first by the Arizona Capitol Times.

Barry Goldwater, who died in 1998, helped found the modern Republican Party in Arizona and served five terms as U.S. senator before retiring in 1987. A leading conservative nationally, he was the Republican Party's nominee in 1964, a race he lost to Lyndon Johnson.

Don Goldwater, 50, serves as Republican Party chairman for a legislative district that includes his residence in Laveen, an unincorporated community on Phoenix's southwestern outskirts. He is a former board member of the Goldwater Institute, a Phoenix think tank with libertarian leanings.

Goldwater resigned effective Thursday as special events coordinator for the Arizona Department of Administration.

He'll join a still-developing field of Republicans seeking the party's 2006 gubernatorial nomination.

Former state Senate President John Greene, a fiscal conservative and social moderate, has announced his candidacy. Current Senate President Ken Bennett, a conservative from Prescott, has said he intends to announce within several weeks whether he will formally explore a bid for governor. State Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, has said he may also run.

Several prominent Republicans have decided against challenging Napolitano, a Democrat who won a narrow victory in 2002 but who enjoys strong poll ratings.

That all depends on who is being polled....

Its great to live in a country where your name counts so much. I am so glad we no longer live in Kingdom's where only the royalty were able to attain power.

Kennedy,Clinton,Bush,etc... just because dad or uncle did something big, doesn't mean you will.

Obviously, none of the following are things you'd consider 'big'. I know some folks with similar credentials who would disagree with you.

Republican Party activist Don Goldwater,
Republican Party chairman for a legislative district that
board member of the Goldwater Institute, a Phoenix think tank with libertarian leanings.

I assume that libertarian Don is pro-choice on abortion, as his uncle became in his old age? I think we'd be better off with someone who is conservative on both economic and social issues, since otherwise Napolitano might win over socially conservative, economically moderate Democrats ("Pinto Democrats" I believe they call then in Arizona), a group that could well decide the election.

That’s why I won’t buy any of Hank Williams III’s records. He’s just coasting on a famous name, while his dad, Hank Williams Jr. had to make it on his own.

Sounds great, but does the name still have juice out there anymore?

People were being told yesterday that a formidable candidate was going to announce soon. I'd say that the state level pubbies believe it does.

Out here in the sticks, I can honestly say I've never heard of Don Goldwater. We'll see how things shake out.

Thanks for the info; Don is a great leader. He was in charge of the community service project for AZ at the convention. Kept us informed with frequent e-mails.

AND he's a nice, nice guy.

He should easily beat that dour John Greene, and hopefully knock off Butch.

You would assume wrong.

Don is about the most conservative Republican Party member you'll ever meet. He is strongly pro-life. You will see all the conservative organizations roll out to endorse him very quickly. While the Goldwater Institute has "libertarian leanings" according to KVOA channel 4, Goldwater is 100% conservative Republican. You'll see. He rocks!

"Don is about the most conservative Republican Party member you'll ever meet. He is strongly pro-life."

You have no idea how happy (and relieved) I am to hear that. I chose my handle because Republicans before I was born were divided into conservative "Goldwater Republicans" and liberal "Rockefeller Republicans," and I am certainly among the former. If Don Goldwater wins the governorship as a strong social (and economic) conservative, hopefully I won't get as many comments from people who point to Barry Goldwater's pro-choice stance in his later years.

It's also refreshing to find a self-described libertarian who is strongly pro-life. I have never understood why so many libertarians believe that, in order to be consistent with their small-government principles (which I share to a great extent), they must be pro-choice on abortion, since believing in small government does not imply that one believes that murder laws should be repealed. If one recognizes that life begins at conception, then one must support laws that make the murder of the unborn illegal, just as one must support laws that make murder of the already-born illegal.

BTW, the most libertarian member of Congress, Ron Paul (R-TX), is pro-life and supports making abortion illegal. I wish he were more outspoken on the issue and convinced more libertarians to protect the right to life of the unborn.

Hey Jinxie,

I guess I could also say that just because someone's dad or uncle did something great doesn't mean he WON'T do something great too.

I just get tired of seeing people ride on their name.

Hillary is a great example.

I know, you're absolutely right.

Your comment made us bring out what he has done so far...that was good.

It looks like there are two camps looking at Goldwater - one sees his connection with the Goldwater Institute and thinks he's Libertarian, the other has experience with him in Party activities and they see him as a staunch Conservative.

Either way, I think he has what it takes to kick La Gubernadora out of office.
