I think swearing must be like smoking -- when it's been a lifelong habit, it's hard to break.

Speaking from experience, I can tell you there's alot that doesn't go away unless your passion's been neutered.

Almost.........

WE need to get rid of the baser things.  Not by 'prayer' (though it helps), but with a dedicated and mature approach to controlling ourselves.

NIV Galatians 5:22-23
 22.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
 23.  gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

NIV Ephesians 4:22-32
 22.  You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
 23.  to be made new in the attitude of your minds;
 24.  and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
 25.  Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
 26.  "In your anger do not sin" : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
 27.  and do not give the devil a foothold.
 28.  He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.
 29.  Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
 30.  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
 31.  Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
 32.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

NIV Colossians 3:5-8
 5.  Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
 6.  Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.
 7.  You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.
 8.  But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

NIV 1 Thessalonians 5:6
   So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.

NIV 1 Thessalonians 5:8
   But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.

NIV 2 Timothy 2:19
 19.  Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness."

NIV 1 Timothy 3:2-3
 2.  Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
 3.  not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

NIV Titus 1:8
   Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled,  upright, holy and disciplined.

NIV Titus 2:1-6
 1.  You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.
 2.  Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.
 3.  Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.
 4.  Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children,
 5.  to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
 6.  Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.

NIV Titus 2:11-12
 11.  For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.
 12.  It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,

NIV 1 Peter 1:13
   Therefore, prepare your minds for action; self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.

NIV 1 Peter 4:7
   The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.

NIV 1 Peter 5:8
   Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

NIV 2 Peter 1:5-7
 5.  For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
 6.  and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-controlled, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;
 7.  and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.

(We ain't perfect yet!!!   ;^)
