Reagan's Last Win
Investor's Business Daily ^ | July 29, 2005 | Editorial

Trade: The House's cliffhanger 217-215 passage of the Central America Free Trade Agreement is a decisive victory for free markets and democracy. It's also Ronald Reagan's final triumph.

This victory is President Reagan's legacy. Because CAFTA, by slashing duties and giving free markets a boost, makes Reagan's Caribbean Basin Initiative permanent.

As such, CAFTA creates a vast permanent bulwark against totalitarianism that will benefit the U.S. and its southern neighbors. Central America now has a bright future based on the one thing that makes democracies strong and nations viable — free markets.

Reagan knew that in the struggle against tyranny, it wouldn't take only American might to end the threat of tyranny. Prosperity mattered too. America fought a decadelong war to secure freedom in Central America. The U.S. also offered an economic platform for growth. That Reagan platform is now called CAFTA.

Not a big fan of CAFTA, but since we already allowed tax free imports from most of these countries I'm glad we will at least going to be able to send our goods there tax free as well. We do need to get control of trade. I also support low revenue tariffs (1% or 2% rather than the 50% to 100% protective tariffs) to help pay for border patrols and securing the ports against terrorists. I always think of it like a flee market. You can trade all you want, but you have to pay the owner a small fee to get in the door.

The ancient Egyptians believed that you remained alive so long as you were remembered and your name was spoken. Long live the great Ronald Reagan!

No. Reagan's last win will be when hundreds of incoming Chinese nuclear warheads are turned to vapor by laser beams fired from high-flying aircraft.

"America fought a decadelong war to secure freedom in Central America."

And the Daniel Ortegas of this world creep back under their rocks. The prosperity promoted by free trade will keep them there. Next we need to go after Chavez.

Viva Reagan!

ummmmmmmmmmmmmm I hate to rain on your parade here...
R. Reagan put a tariff on Japanese bikes, thus playing a very large part in saving Harley Davidson.

You're losing the arguement if you need to bring Reagan into the discussion.

BTW: The Reagan Democrats will soon be competing against more third worlders. Anyone think their wages will be going up?

Ronald Reagan stood for and promoted what was best for most Americans and America.

The left wing Rats then and today stand for what is not good for most Americans and America.

It's funny how people bitch on FR about Republicans selling them out with CAFTA. NAFTA and CAFTA are Republican projects through and through and have been so for the last the 20 years. Reagan is the father of free trade in the Americas.
