A warning shot might have done the trick...or a shot in the leg.

Yeah, right. The old shoot the club out of his hand trick right? If you have to shoot, shoot to kill. The guy was an idiot.

I'm not getting bent out of shape over these facts - let's wait for the pharmacologist to speak.

Warning shots only work in the movies. When a crazed and potentially high lunatic starts coming at you and threatening to kill you, you shoot the body. You may not have another chance to put them down.

Yet another suicide by cop. Tragic for all involved.

Never bring a club to a gun fight.

"I think he must have been on narcotics, because he didn't exhibit rational behavior."

Perhaps he was just high on nature.

The only justification for shooting at anyone is fear for your life or others. It's really hard to be in fear for your life if you have enough time to shoot someone in the leg or fire a warning shot. In fact, a purposeful shot in the leg means you weren't in fear for your life and were shooting for other reasons. It's a good way to get a long sentence in jail and sued for everything you own.

Police are trained to shoot to stop and to only shoot when their or others lives are in danger. The most predictable way to stop someone is two shots to the center of mass (i.e. the chest) and that's what they are trained to do. It's the easiest to hit with the highest possibility of stopping the threat.

I'm afraid you're wrong about that.

Firing 'warning shots' or shots to wound goes against every rule of gun safety and legal precedent known to Americans.

If you're justified in pulling the triger, you're justified in killing.

Period.

End of story.

An instructor once told me that once you pull the trigger, all ethical, moral, and legal issues you may have are now yesterdays newspaper, pulling the trigger the second time, just shows a certain sincerity on your part.

Best Regards

A warning shot might have done the trick.

Don't carry a gun if you aren't willing to use it.

Don't shoot a gun unless you are willing to kill whatever it is pointed toward. In fact, don't point a gun unless you are willing to kill whatever it is pointed toward.

The article doesn't really give many details.

It could have been a 6'-4" foaming-at-the-mouth, club wielding maniac against a 5'-8" ranger. It doesn't even say if the rangers were male or female.

The wife tried to get him to settle down, they pepper sprayed him. Nothing worked.

Maniac got put down.

I suspect crystal meth.

A camper brandished a club and threatened to kill two park rangers,..

If it was a bear out of control, I bet they would have used bear strength pepper spray. It's OK to shoot the human who doesn't belong in a park.

Once again Idiot Reporting rears it's ugly bylines.

I am reading about a domestic disturbance at a campground. The "disturber" walks away from the "disturbee" and goes after the 2 Rangers. As he attempts to club Ranger #1, Ranger #2 shoots him, dead. So far so good. Then I see "The man, whose name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene." Don'tcha think the "next of kin", being the above "disturbee" already knows?

Sheeeesh!

Tim Hughes is from San Dimas, not San Demas.. Good old phonetic spelling at work again.

Gonna have to ask what happened when he gets back into town.

If the subject is high a "shot in the leg" probably would not deter him.

he became increasingly hostile and wandered around the campsite despite orders to stay still..., still ignoring warnings to stop, he directly approached the rangers and threatened to kill them.... When the man came within 10 feet of one of the rangers, the ranger used pepper spray, but the man didn't stop, and the second ranger shot him twice... This guy was way out of control... They did all they could to try to get the guy to cooperate, but he was just gone. I think he must have been on narcotics, because he didn't exhibit rational behavior...

See, after many years, that vegan diet deletes several essential chemicals from the body and that, coupled by constant use of illegal chemicals, causes even the most devoted environmentalist to act, well, crazy. You know him and his partner were up there smoking some good stuff. I believe if the tox screens come back positive that Smokey is authorized to put crossed MJ leaves on the side of his ATV. Five, of course, makes him an Ace.
