Rajibul Islam, who is in critical condition in hospital, said he was kidnapped on Tuesday by an extortionist who bound and gagged him and slit his throat, the English-language Daily Star reported. He said he passed out after the incident.
A rickshaw driver found the boy with knife wounds to his neck.
"When I regained my senses, I found myself lying in the sand," the boy said.
Crime is a major political issue in Bangladesh.
Advertisement: An elite security force comprising the police and military was introduced last year to crack down on crimes such as blackmail and violent assault. Supporters of the force, which has been criticised by human rights groups for the number of suspects killed in exchanges of fire, say it has loosened the extortionists' stranglehold and ended a culture of impunity among criminals.
But extortion remains widespread, with street hawkers and shop owners who earn just a few dollars a day complaining they hand over up to half their daily earnings to police or 'linemen' working for the blackmailers.
Islam means peace!

Wow. What a tough boss.
Bangladesh = "East Pakistan" = 95% Muslim.
LVM
I hope you're wrong.
To call militant Muslims nazis is an insult to nazis. Islam is more like raw nihilism.
The guy who did this is really going to pay. He may get as much as 5 years.
Muslim 83%, Hindu 16%, other 1% (1998)
Still, 83% is a very high figure.
As an aside, CIA factbook is a very good resource on foreign info. I use it frequently.
And yeah, I know it's dated 7 years ago but it can't have changed all that much. I wish they'd update some of it someday.
