Spillane (Right) and Hammett (Far Left) were hacks. Raymond Chandler and Chester Himes were better writers in the gumshoe genre, and both were apolitical.

Not sure of his politics but from reading a few of his "Perry Mason" books plus an article or two in "Outdoor Life" or maybe it was "Field & Stream" one definitely gets the impression that Erle Stanley Gardner was conservative.
Also a good writer.
