A Newport News woman, who police said abandoned her 4-year-old son on the shoulder of the Capital Beltway and then bumped him with her car as she drove off Tuesday night, was charged with felony child neglect and hit and run, Virginia State Police said.
Channoah Alece Green, 22, was arrested later that night about 90 miles away after she was involved in a two-car crash on Interstate 95 in Hanover County just north of Richmond, said Corinne Geller, a state police spokeswoman.
Green, who was charged with reckless driving in that incident, is scheduled to appear in Fairfax County court today on the charges involving her son, Geller said.
"He was trying to get back in the vehicle when she struck him, and then she drove off," Geller said.
Police are still investigating, but Sgt. C.F. Kincaid said the child explained that his mother was "upset with him."
"He wasn't sitting down [in the car] like he was supposed to," he said.
Kincaid said the boy, who was abandoned near Lee Highway in Fairfax County, appeared in "very good spirits" when he arrived at Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he was treated for bruises and cuts to his face that appeared to be scrapes from the gravel shoulder.
The preschooler was placed with Fairfax County Child Protective Services, police said. Geller said police were withholding his name, citing an ongoing investigation.
......The incident is the latest of several involving mothers allegedly mistreating their children in cars.
In Green's case, a driver on the Beltway called police about 10:10 p.m. Tuesday and said she had found the 4-year-old boy wandering on the side of the interstate near the Lee Highway overpass.

Give me liberty, or give me meth.
I'd be willing to bet nobody even knows who the fathers of these boys are.
They look like two very loving mother's. (sarcasm of course)
No, but Lori Heine sure looks a gawd awful yellow....
But whatever you NEVER profile </sarc>
(sigh).....BTTT
I could see my mom wanting to have done this to me on many occasions. she wasn't perfect, but at least she never left me locked in a hot car or dumped me on the side of the road. nuthin' a good whack upside the head from dad can't fix.
Wait a second folks - these are mothers!
And as far as the family court system is concerned, they really can do no wrong.
If you think the judiciary has run amok in this country, I can tell you it started with the miscarriages of justice perpetrated in the family court system for the last 30 years.
That whole thing is a monument to liberal do-goodism gone awry.
I know personally of a mother who used her pregnancy to get leniency on a meth charge. She made an adoption plan, allowed the birth parents to assist in the birth, and then informed them that next hour that she was keeping the baby.
Nothing the police, the doctors, the adoption agency, nor CPS could do about it, even as she was wheeled out to the hospital foyer for a smoke. She informed all concerned that she planned to breast feed her baby.
Ah, but she's a mother ladies and gentlemen. Mother's are just a special group of people who must be shielded from the harshnesses of reality by our legal system in the name of justice. They are automatically better qualified to take care of our young people by dint of their biological predispositions to the task. In California, Father's get 28% visitation right out of the bag. If the mother is a proven hazard, that goes to 50% tops. Percent of father's that get 50%? - 1.0%
34 million aborted babies will tell you just how SPECIAL mothers are.
Mine used to smoke weed with her friends and get stoned all day. Yes, but me and my two brothers made sure that despite his lousy choices in life, my Catholic father who worked three jobs to provide us with everything would stick around to make sure we at least had a roof over our heads.
In WA state, having baby's out of wedlock and hammering the father for half is a growth business, even if the baby isn't yours. You can file that under the heading "Nothing in life, my dear lad, is free - and were you to keep it in your pants . . ."
Even rats give have offspring. Being a mother is no trick.
For my money, I'd take an orphanage any day.
Mothers, God's special creatures. One of my wife's good friend had an abortion, then after being married had two boys. She likes to tell people how kids should be raised.
Childbirth is a miracle my friends. A miracle.
Lori Heine reminds me of Mrs. Crabtree on South Park.
"...The reports last night were that the mom dropped the kid on the side of the road just where 66 and the beltway converge - if there is anything worse the being dropped on the beltway, that's it. A very bad convergence zone..."
No kidding. It's a miracle that the boy didn't get run over. I've seen people zoom down the shoulder there when traffic is heavy (i.e., every afternoon, and whenever there's a Redskins game.)
BTW, we solved the problem by getting a DVD in the new minivan. It's like they're on novacaine.
She looks like one of the masks you can buy out of Fangoria magazine....

You're repeating yourself.
He won't forget it.
Even infants who are abandoned suffer the consequences of abandonment, is, they feel unworthy and rejected as they grow up.
"You're repeating yourself."
Oops, you're right.
Seriously though, your post was spot-on. Good show.
Cub...amen to what you said about praying that the child doesn't remember. Poor, poor children.
"Channoah Alece Green"
At least "Green" is spelled correctly.
I know. Doesn't it just tear your heart out at how some children are being tossed aside by their own mothers? Imagine...the mother who is supposed to lay down her life to save her child ends up being the one who drowns her child, beats her child, leaves her child with a boyfriend of hers who attacks and kills her child and now this...just toss the child out of the car like a stinking piece of garbage. Well, I guess murdering a child in the womb doesn't mean anything so why would tossing a child out of the car and onto the road to fend for himself at 7 years old mean anything? These people seem to forget the ultimate judgement day is coming and they are gonna have the rudest awakening in their entire miserable lives.
