The number of attacks on Asians has risen significantly since the London bombings, police and Muslim groups say.
The number reported to the Islamic Human Rights Commission - not including those reported to police - has risen more than 13-fold, its chairman said. The total number of "faith-related" attacks reported across London rose 500% compared with the same period last year, the Muslim Safety Forum says.
This "backlash" is "exactly what those who promote terrorism want" police say. Association of Chief Police Officers community and counter-terrorism head Assistant Chief Constable Rob Beckley told BBC News the police would protect Asians and Muslims.
"We have to, and we will, sustain a response to this."
People are going to fight back Muslim Safety Forum
The police have gone to great lengths to stress those suspected of involvement in the bombings are not from any single ethnic group. But the Muslim Safety Forum, which works closely with the police monitoring the total number of incidents reported, blames "prominent people within our society" and the media for saying all British Muslims share something in common with the bombers.
A spokesman told BBC News "bigots" now felt they had the "right to commit these atrocities". The 7 July bombings were "a single criminal act" and all British Muslims could not be held responsible, he added.
British Muslims would not continue to allow themselves to be victimised and criminalised without a further "backlash" from them, the spokesman told BBC News.
"People are going to fight back."
Islamic Human Rights Commission chairman Massoud Shadjareh is monitoring the number attacks on Asian people not reported to the police.
He told BBC News the commission was "extremely concerned at the escalation of backlash attacks against Muslims since 7/7".
"Normally we get something in the region of between six and seven every week. "Now in less than two weeks we have had 170 reported to us alone."
The attacks, across the whole of the UK, covered "everything" from verbal abuse and spitting to arson, Mr Shadjareh added.
Nine mosques had been attacked, a garage firebombed, people assaulted in the street, and homes had had their windows broken, he told BBC News.
"It is really very worrying."
Three days after the 7 July bombings, Kamal Butt, 48, from Pakistan was murdered outside a corner shop in Nottingham. Eight juveniles and a man have been arrested.
Compare these instances with the far fewer numbers of true hate crimes that followed 9/11.Though the Left sought out any evidence of a violent response on Muslims, it just wasn't there in any numbers that could be deemed significant. Says something about the character of a People.
Boy, your a smart one.
These attacks are wrong and the authorities need to step in and punish those who engage in assault.
On the other hand, moderate Muslims in the UK need to stop justifying or excusing terrorism and take an aggressive role in identifying and isolating the Muslim extremists involved.
That nose will dominate the world, not islam.
Yes. So far we know that Pakistanis, Somalis and a Jamaican are involved.
Who all happen to be Presbyterian.
The are, however, from one single "religious" group.
These are just "Tough-Love" Crimes. </humor>
Note that the July 7 bombings were a single criminal act whereas the incidents of Muslim harassment are atrocities.
What would we do without the BBC to help us keep the terminology straight?
Uh, yes I have been on the tube... many times, thank you very much.
And like I said, the image isn't real.

The British should be better than this. They should not be descending to the same level.
They are quoting the spokesman. Blame that terminology on him.
Interesting as all this debate over hate crimes is, please remember that hate crime is a legal term. When applied to another crime, it makes that other crime worse in the eyes of the law.
The 7/7 attacks are terrorist attacks resulting in mass murder, and seeing as they are pretty much by definition hate crimes and are about as bad you can get on the scale of crimes, the use of the term becomes a moot point.
uuuhhhhhhhhh, they do... they are ALL MUSLIMES!!!
British Muslims would not continue to allow themselves to be victimized and criminalized without a further "backlash" from them, the spokesman told BBC News. "People are going to fight back."
Six months later the leaders of the United Soccer Hooligans Association and the BNP said "Britain's will not continue to allow themselves to be BLOWN-UP and MURDERED without a further backlash from them... people are going to fight back" he said as the LAST MOSQUE in England was torched...
Fair enough.
Not "hate crimes." "Reparations."
"Three days after the 7 July bombings, Kamal Butt, 48, from Pakistan was murdered outside a corner shop in Nottingham. Eight juveniles and a man have been arrested."
Camel Butt???? Come one, is that a real name???
How about dirty looks? Do those upset you, you whining worthless mass murderer apologist?
