When you grow up on a farm, at an early age you become a veterinarian and sometimes doctor, at a very early age.

I personally knew a man that was bitten in the tip of a finger by a rattlesnake while fixing fence. He simply chopped off the tip of the finger, then killed the rattler, and went back to fixing fence with a dirty handkerchief wrapped around the finger.

Lots of little stories like that from my childhood.
