The Bolton nomination: Do the right thing
Thursday, July 28, 2005
The White House once again is hinting that it may give John Bolton a recess appointment as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations if the Senate fails to take up his nomination before Friday's summer recess.
It needs to do more than hint; the stakes are too high.
Mr. Bolton's nomination has languished since March 17. Among the silliest reasons -- Bolton is a blunt straight-talker and may have yelled at subordinates as undersecretary of State. Among the scurrilous -- Bolton supposedly pressured intelligence analysts when their reports didn't comport with his views..SNIP
Democrats have been demanding classified information regarding the intelligence matter. But the White House has steadfastly, and rightly, refused....SNIP
There right now are matters of incredible import to the United States sitting before the United Nations. And this country needs the kind of no-nonsense representation that John Bolton will offer. Right now.
A recess appointment is a constitutionally prescribed way for a president to fill a vacancy. An appointment now would put Bolton on the job until the 110th Congress convenes in January 2007. And it would send a strong message to Democrats and Republicans alike that obstruction solely for obstruction's sake will not be tolerated.
Do it, Mr. President.

I hope he does it.
Proud of this hometown paper that doesn't have its head inserted in the wrong place like the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
Go for the recess appointment, G.W.
bump
That's great.

Remember: Teresa Heinz Kerry told a Pittsburgh newspaperman to ``shove it'' just minutes after urging the Pennsylvania delegates to restore a more civil tone to politics.
``We need to turn back some of the creeping, un-Pennsylvanian and sometimes un-American traits that are coming into some of our politics,'' she told delegates.
Colin McNickle, the editorial page editor of the conservative Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, later questioned her repeatedly on what she meant by the term ``un-American.''
After repeated denials, Heinz Kerry told McNickle, ``You said something I didn't say. Now shove it.''
Yep, he was cool. He's a pretty darn good writer and a nice guy too.
Just do it.
I wish he'd do it.
BUMP!
I agree. Do it. Do it immediately upon recess. And then redo it at every succeeding recess.
No.
