Saddam was hated by the fundamentalists because he ran a relatively secular state (his brutality kept the fundies in check). Now he's gone, and Islam takes his place. I wonder how less brutal the new regime will ultimately be, especially to women and to Christians.

Back to the same old shiite
What's with these people, it's like a battered wife syndrome. Why cant they stand up and run their own country instead of letting someone else dictate to them how to live. What simpletons, just like democrats.

Inevitable. Was the biggest argument against the war. Same thing will happen in Syria. Anyone thinking otherwise - I've beach front property in Montana I'd like to sell to you. Great surf, picture postcard lighthouse, palm trees, you name it.

This is the sort of thing that happens when you put the cart before the horse. At some point down the road we're going to have no choice but to end up threatening to obliterate most of these Middle Eastern countries anyway, just as we had to threaten to obliterate Germany and Japan in WWII in order to civilize them. What the Iraqi consitution says doesn't make much of a difference at this point.
I think it was a noble, but misguided, effort.

HEY WHERE ARE ALL THE FREEPERS WHO CLAIMED THIS WASN'T REAL JUST 3 DAYS AGO?
To: churchillbuff
Douglas MacArthur would never have permitted this. Paul Bremer was such a pussy and frankly so is Bush. We should be having the Iraqi oil pay us back for every penny we spent in Iraq, and we should be banning Shari'a Law from their new Constitution. But Bush wont do either because he is a slave to political correctness. It is despicable.

"Islam is the official religion of the state and is the main source of legislation"
The key word in this sentence is "main." Everything hinges on how that word is interpreted. Obviously Islam will be a primary influence on legislation; anyone who doubted that was living in a dream world. But if a hard-line interpretation of sharia is avoided, it will be a loss for the terrorists and the fundamentalist imams. "Main" gives us hope - for now - that there is resistance to the hard-liners and that this resistance is finding its way into the law. Keeping my fingers crossed.

If this is the result it would have been much better to keep Saddam in place.

You watch, a couple hundred years from now, likely sooner, the ICLU will be denying the writers of the Iraq Constitution were Muslims.

We shoulda dropped a Constitution on their collective desk and said "this is your Constitution - do a good job and we'll let you amend it some day."
Oh well.

And this is a surprise to who? Oh, that's right, Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Perle. And, maybe a handful of Bushbots who bought this crap hook, line and sinker. To the 90% of people here who mocked Colin Powell when he warned the president about this....you better hope this draft doesn't go through in it's current form. It becomes a tough choice; let them have their Islamic law, or force them to adopt what we want for them....which is not democratic in the least, now is it?
To: churchillbuff
Not sure I want to enter this slugfest but a sharia-based government would be a disaster and a mockery of our guy's and gal's sacrifices. Why they cannot at least adopt our Bill of Rights if not a basic copy of our Constitution is beyond me. Freedom of religion, press and assembly - its a good start you idiot Iraqis! The youngest, most powerful, most free nation on Earth - a good example just sitting there awaiting emulation.
