Senate Minority Whip Richard J. Durbin acknowledged yesterday that he was the source for a newspaper column that reported earlier this week that Judge John G. Roberts Jr. said he could not rule in a Supreme Court case where U.S. law might conflict with Catholic teaching.
But the Illinois Democrat maintains that the column by George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley incorrectly captured the private conversation that the senator had with Judge Roberts in his Capitol office Friday.
When the column appeared Monday, Mr. Durbin's office clarified that "Judge Roberts said repeatedly that he would follow the rule of law."
Spokesman Joe Shoemaker also said he did not know who Mr. Turley's source was, although only a handful of people were in the room at the time.
"Whoever the source was either got it wrong or Jonathan Turley got it wrong," Mr. Shoemaker said Monday.
Yesterday, Mr. Shoemaker said the source was Mr. Durbin.
"He and Turley were in the green room of the NBC studios," he said. "Turley was getting makeup put on, and Durbin was taking it off.
"They talked for about a minute, and I'm being generous," Mr. Shoemaker added. "Durbin said Turley didn't identify himself as a journalist but introduced himself as a law professor."

Give me a friggin' break. John Turley has been all over the media since Clinton's impeachment. He was one of the few liberals who supported Clinton's impeachment. Turley is a lawyer. Durbin is a lawyer. If Durbin, a player in D.C., didn't recognize Turley, another player in D.C., then Durbin needs to resign as a leader of the Democrat party in the Senate.
Durbin has really proven himself to be a true Democrat--an ASS--the past few weeks.
Doofus Durbin talks to a total stranger who happens to be a journalist, and within no more than a minute tells him this. He just gets dumber and dumber.
So now the Democrats have added "anti-papal hysteria" to the list of things they accuse their opponents of but actually practice themselves.
Added to the list of: (1) lying, (2) condescension towards minorities, (3)contempt for the poor, (4)elitism, and (5)voter fraud.
Anyone else care to add to this list?
Just when you think it can't get any dumber, hang around because if there is a liberal involved it most certainly will.
My other senator is the socialist baby killer Obama.
Does it get any worse?
Oh, I forgot New York - Hillary and Schumer.
Hey Durbin, religious beliefs are the foundation of this country and its Constitution. So, yes, I hope that Judge Roberts uses his religious beliefs when correctly deciding cases.
When will someone ask a liberal judge to "separate his extremist, secular views" when deciding cases?
Can Durban be recalled? What idiots ever voted for this guy?
Don't we owe Durbin a little praise? He did, after all, prove there is one Liberal Journalist interested in integrity that will not allow himself to be used as a propaganda prop for the Left.
SS, I for one hope Turley did get at least one aspect wrong...the part where he wrote that Roberts told Durbin he might have to recuse himself if a conflict were to arise between his Catholic beliefs (or the position of the Catholic church, maybe it was) and the law as the saw it. I hope Judge Roberts did not say that.
There's no way that durbin the turbin did not recognize Turley. He's been all over the tv for years. Once again durbin is lying.
Yes, he is "my senator". We in IL are scr***d.
So Dick Turdbin is now blaming Turley, LOL!
ping
Turley's source for the quote was Durbin.
Durbin has been shown to have lied.
He didn't say it.
The Illionois Republican Party have enough ammunition to gin-up a ton of slam-bang television ads to be used against Durbin and the Democrats in 2006.
And NJ has Corzlime and Lausenberg
Then there is California with Frankenstein and Boxer
However, that won't stop certain right wing talkers from harping on Roberts' answer.
The left has the media and they also have our own talk show hosts and pundits.
Cognitive dissonance.
That's enough of an explanation in san francisco.
"Then there is California with Frankenstein and Boxer"
Maine is also in the running with Collins and Snowe but I've got y'all beat...Mass. with Kennedy and Kerry.
