The Turning of the Tide
Wednesday, July 27, 2005 | rightcoast

Two recent stories concerning the war on terror demonstrate flip sides of a coin regarding how we can move forward against a savage enemy.

In London, there was the swift use of deadly force by British police, eliminating an extremely suspicious and potential threat to the subway system and public at large.

In Washington, there is a story circulating that the White House is moving away from describing the war on terror as "The War on Terror," preferring instead a new term: the Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism.

So, the question is, do we have the "cajones" and war-time mentality to prosecute this fight as an actual war, or will we descend into a PC-infused confusion where this is rebranded as a struggle?

We are in a war, whether we want to call it that or not. This is very, very troubling to me. President Bush needs to take command of this situation and put the brakes on this more sensitive approach.

Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism

There are all sorts of violent extremists who don't fly planes into buildings or blow up subways. If they don't turn their violence against us, we aren't at war with them.

It's a stern disagreement with non Christian peoples of a differing viewpoint.

Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism.

Says absolutely nothing.

Let's insert one word......

Global struggle against violent MUSLIM extremism.

Now, isn't that so much better. And more accurate.

Any source for this? I can't picture Bush getting quite that mushy with it.

If one reads the eminent historian Arnold Toynbee's "A Study of History" it is very difficult to avoid the conclusion that Western Civilization is in a period of decline. I emphasize, not a particular country, but the entire Western Civilization.

Can this decline be reversed? I have no idea, but I will give you odds.

How about: "The Defensive War of the Feeble Remnants of the Christian West Against Irrational Islam"?

I can understand the use of the word "global." "Violent extremism" seems to be a cop-out. The rule of law ends up being the determining factor, which is why the U.N. is trying to come up with a definition.

It is also why the rest of us need to continue to disregard PCism and name it for what it is. We may be the last bastions of common sense, which is something that is rapidly disappearing. Of course, that may mean that one of these days, we will find ourselves sitting in front of the I.C.C.

Never mind - Rumsfeld used the term in a May 2005 speech in Philly. It doesn't look like he was recharacterizing it though - just another stab at eroding support for the Administration...

Why not World War IV, against Islamo and Sinofascism, and treason from within.

That's what is really happening, whether anyone wants to admit it or not.

If you can't clearly identify a problem, you have no chance of solving it.

Looks like the British Police are using the Global Resistance Against Violent Extremism on suspected terrorists.
