PATAKI BOWING OUT, HE TELLS TOP AIDES (quits gov race, sure loser eyes WH run)
NY POST ^ | July 27, 2005 | FREDRIC U. DICKER

Posted on 07/27/2005 3:04:04 AM PDT by Liz

Gov. Pataki told a group of aides last night that he will not seek re-election next year — and alluded to a possible run for president in 2008 .............

.....the dinner was attended by about 30 people, including Pataki's wife, Libby, along with some of the governor's closest aides and supporters.

They included state Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long and Pataki fund-raiser Cathy Blaney.

In recent months, Pataki has indicated an interest in testing the water for a potential 2008 presidential run, although state and national GOP leaders give him little chance of succeeding.

People who attended the dinner said Pataki left the door open for a presidential run........"It's in my mind, and I will let you know, and the people of the state know, when we're ready to do that," said Pataki, a three-term governor who came to office after defeating Gov. Mario Cuomo in 1994 pledging to remake a state government that had been run by Democrats for decades.

Nearly a dozen public-opinion polls this year have shown Pataki facing defeat at the hands of state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, the all-but-certain Democratic candidate for governor in 2006.

Two weeks ago, Pataki appeared at several events in Ohio — the site of the first presidential primary caucus — and did nothing to quell speculation that he is eyeing the White House.

State Republicans will face a desperate struggle to find a top-flight candidate.

..........former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, has ruled out entering the race in order to concentrate on his private business interests and a potential 2008 run for president, according to his political advisers.

Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, a New York native.........said earlier this year that he may enter the race if Pataki bows out, although state GOP leaders give him little chance of success.

At last?

Amazing the amount of damage we Americans allow these charlatans to perform as we march merrily along the road to oblivion.

It is only now, after living for these many years, that I have begun to understand how the German Jews were able to be led to the gas chambers with relative ease.

Tell me if I'm wrong, if a northeastern Republican gets the nomination, Hillary's back in the White House.

Did I miss us changing our rules, or doesn't the writer know the difference between Ohio and Iowa? I guess it's all a blur west of the Hudson. :sheesh:

Maybe he thinks he can be like Hillary and talk a good game and everyone will forget his record as a senator.

Hillary is anti gun rights, for raising taxes, for partial birth abortion, against increasing border guards on the border and everyone is saying she is a centrist.

Maybe Pataki thinks he can fool everyone like Hillary has and talk conservative and people will say he is a conservative.

If Hillary with her 0 ACU rating is a centrist according to the msm then Pataki is a red blooded conservative.

He knows he would lose, his polls are in the toilet.
He will not come close to the White House.

Too conservative for NY, and too liberal for the rest of us, but with Hillary running for President, feels he can sell himself as the conservative candidate for President.

If a Northeastern Republican is nominated in 08 I am out of the Republican party. There is no difference in Rino's and the Dems.

Pataki's loser issues like being pro-abortion speak loud and clear as to where he's going---to political oblivion.

You're thinking too much. He'll lose because he's incredibly boring and carries a lot of baggage that stinks like graft and corruption.

Giuliani would appoint law and order judges, which tend to be strict constructionists.

Or would you prefer that Hillary choose them?

Well, no one thought he could take on Cuomo and he managed that. Maybe he thinks lightning can strike twice. Does he think he could carry New York State?

Right now, I'd say the two biggest names are both from New York(*): Rudy and Hillary. So Pataki is already running third in his home state.

TS
(*)One is from New York, one just says she's from New York.
