Clinton Angers Left With Call for Unity

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's call for an ideological cease-fire in the Democratic Party drew an angry reaction yesterday from liberal bloggers and others on the left, who accused her of siding with the centrist Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) in a long-running dispute over the future of the party.

Long a revered figure by many in the party's liberal wing, Clinton (D-N.Y.) unexpectedly found herself under attack after calling Monday for a cease-fire among the party's quarreling factions and for agreeing to assume the leadership of a DLC-sponsored initiative aimed at developing a more positive policy agenda for the party.

The reaction highlighted the dilemma Democratic politicians face trying to satisfy energized activists on the left -- many of whom are hungering for party leaders to advance a more full-throated agenda and more aggressively confront President Bush -- while also cultivating the moderate Democrats and independents whose support is crucial to winning elections. The challenge has become more acute because of the power and importance grass-roots activists, symbolized by groups such as MoveOn.org and liberal bloggers, have assumed since the 2004 election.

The most pointed critique of Clinton came in one of the most influential blogs on the left, Daily Kos out of Berkeley, Calif., which called Clinton's speech "truly disappointing" and said she should not provide cover for an organization that often has instigated conflict within the party.

"If she wanted to give a speech to a centrist organization truly interested in bringing the various factions of the party together, she could've worked with NDN," the blog said in a reference to the New Democrat Network, with which Daily Kos's Markos Moulitsas is associated. "Instead, she plans on working with the DLC to come up with some common party message yadda yadda yadda.

If we are lucky they will completely implode in July of 2006. The RAT civil war is going to get real ugly. The militants they have developed over the years will become their worst nightmare.

Unity? Unity?! They're supposed to be the party of diversity, not unity.

Idiots. They should be rallying around her, knowing that she's no centrist and, once in power, will reveal her true colors.

one of the most influential blogs on the left, Daily Kos out of Berkeley, Calif.

That's like saying MoveOn.org has been influential in elections for the RATS. rolfol! Only the left wing KOOKS like Barbara Boxer, John Conyers, etc. would be caught on Daily Kos.

Last paragraph of the article:
Meanwhile, Jesse L. Jackson reopened his decades-old battle with the DLC by accusing the group of fronting for corporate interests while ignoring labor and civil rights leaders. "The DLC embraces CAFTA and sells admission to its conference to corporate lobbyists," he said in a speech to the AFL-CIO convention in Chicago.
You go Je$$e! LOL

This is a political calculation on her part. She believes it will cement her as moderate, and a little backlash from the Hard left will not be irreversible in '08 because they'll do what they did in '04. Suck it up and vote against Reps for power.

That stated the Libs ARE in midst of a civil war. That is real. It is not at ALL clear they will vote for someone pretending to be a "moderate". The Democrats do NOT like Senator Clinton. The despise almost as much as do those on the right. Their outrage is not a front to advance her with middle America.

It's going to be interesting to watch the Dems try to juggle each side. The Hard Left owns the party, but because of it, they are on verge of political extinction. The Republicans have their own battles with the "mavericks", but we can still get elected even in the midst of that power struggle. The Dems' opportunities shrink each day.

You're right, this story is so fake. Expect to see many more of these between now and 2008. I wonder how many calls Hillary's office had to make in order to get this printed?

It certainly screams of a typical Clinton machination. They'll come around, bet on it. Either they'll shut up because the whole thing was phony from the start or they will be reminded Who is In Charge when the time comes for her to reach for the nomination. Either way they won't rock the boat.
