ALBANY, N.Y. - Gov. George Pataki, eyeing a possible bid for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination, was expected to announce Wednesday that he will not seek re-election to a fourth term next year, a close Republican associate said Tuesday night.
The associate, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because the governor had not authorized release of the information, said Pataki would announce his decision Wednesday at a news conference in Albany.

Pataki in 08? Somebody kill me now...
I could have told you that--I saw him at a function in 2002 and his speech gave all of the hints that the 3rd term would be his last, probably setting up a White House run. That said, I wouldn't support him for President.
If he had balls, he'd run against the Hildebeast in 2006 instead. If he beat her (a long shot, but still) he'd have a shot in '08. As is, by 2008 it sounds as if he'll be an EX governor and, therefore, a footnote to Presidential history.
Pataki is actually the longest serving governor. He was first elected in 1994. No other govenor elected in 1994 or earlier is still in office. The second longest serving is Huckabee of AR (elected in 1996), who is stepping down next year due to term limits. I think we may have trouble keeping this NY seat. The AR seat might even be competative. Actually other than these two, all other 48 governors were first elected in 1998 or later.
Unless Guiliani runs (not likely), NYS Attorney General Spitzer, a democrat, is almost guaranteed to be the next governor in this blue state.
He's welcome to join fellow RINOs Rudy, Romney, McCain, and Hagel splitting the leftist vote in the primaries.
