Meet Larry Johnson The CIA official turned Democratic spokesman has a pre-9/11 mindset.
The Weekly Standard ^ | 07/25/2005 | Gary Schmitt

ON SATURDAY, former CIA analyst Larry Johnson gave the Democratic party's weekly radio address and excoriated President Bush for not having fired Karl Rove and others in connection with the leak of CIA officer Valerie Plame's name to the press. This followed Johnson's appearance before a panel of House and Senate Democrats on Friday, where he made similar criticisms of the president. A self-described Republican, Johnson argued that the failure of the president to fire Rove and anyone else supposedly involved in the leak had severely damaged national security and would certainly hamper future efforts to recruit informants in the war on terror.

Well, it's good to see that the former CIA employee is now worried about the war on terror. But it's a bit late. On July 10, 2001--two months before the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon--Johnson wrote an op-ed for the New York Times ("The Declining Terrorist Threat") in which he argued that Americans were "bedeviled by fantasies about terrorism" and, in truth, had "little to fear" from terrorism. And, in turn, he rebuked his former colleagues in the national security bureaucracy for using the "fiction" of the terrorist threat to pump up their budgets.

I don't know about you guys but I think that Larry Johnson has had is 15 minutes of fame and people should stop giving him any further air time.

There's no need to elevate this guy into anything more than he is.

It's a faux set-up. The former ambassador's wife was identified by the Reports Officer who testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee. He said that she offered up her husband's name to the deputy director of the CIA counterproliferation dept. Further investigation reveals his name to be Alan Foley. Great covers over at the CIA. This is all on the internet. Any pundit who couldn't find this out is incompetent. This was way before Novak's colomn.

Did you guys know that Wilson had gone on a previous fact finding mission to Africa in 1999?

All roads are pointing to a carefully coordinated attack on a future Republican President... No matter who it was.

Meet Patrick Eddington another of the former CIA group

In late January 1994, my wife Robin and I experienced a genuine "life-changing event." While many of our friends were having children or buying homes, Robin and I were drawn into one of the great historical dramas of the 1990's: the federal government's cover-up of what has become known in the press as Gulf War Syndrome.

As part of her Women's Executive Leadership (WEL) program experience, Robin decided in late January 1994 to solicit a fellowship on Capitol Hill. Using some Agency contacts, Robin discovered that the Senate Banking Committee was in need of additional staff to work on its ongoing investigation into the possible link between alleged chemical exposures and illnesses being reported by Desert Storm veterans. After reading the committee's original September 1993 report, I became interested enough to start digging into the CIA's historical files to see what corroborating evidence I could develop. That simple step evolved into a two-year odyssey which culminated in my resignation from the CIA in October 1996 and the subsequent publication of my book on the subject, Gassed in the Gulf.

Gassed was published in August 1997 by Insignia Publishing Company; the paperback version was published in July 2000 by iUniverse in collaboration with the Authors Guild. I'm gratified that the book was so well received by the veterans' community. Not surprisingly, the national security establishment was less enthusiastic. Those interested in obtaining an autographed copy of Gassed may do so via Backinprint.com, a service of the Authors Guild. Video tape copies of my June 1997 and August 2000 appearances on CSPAN's About Books and Book TV are also available for purchase directly from CSPAN.

Recently, I've finished work on my memoir, Long Strange Journey, which should be available sometime in late 2004. The book chronicles my complete CIA career, as well as what I've been up to since I left government.

My opinion pieces have covered a number of topics: government malfeasance in the defense and intelligence communities; maltreatment of America's veterans; current key issues in international affairs. The Washington Post, The Washington Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Wall Street Journal, and the Army Times Publishing Company Newspapers (anchored by The Army Times) have all been venues for my work. If you have a story idea, or know of a problem in the defense or intelligence establishment that cries out for public scrutiny, email me.

It is unfair to accuse Larry Johnson of having a pre 9/11 mindset pre 9/11. I will admit that I had a pre 9/11 mindset pre 9/11. I've changed. It would be interesting to see if Larry Johnson has.

Just found this:

Who is Larry Johnson? He's the author of one of the more poorly timed op-eds in history. On July 10, 2001, he wrote in the New York Times under the headline "The Declining Terrorist Threat" that "Americans have little to fear" from terrorism unless they travel or work in a few of the world's hotspots.

He added that "Early signs suggest that the decade beginning in 2000 will continue the downward trend" in terrorist activity. (He co-authored a similar piece for this page in 2000.)

A month earlier, and only three months before 9/11, Mr. Johnson told U.S. News and World Report that "Bin Laden has an international network of contacts, but it's more analogous to the Elvis Presley fan club than a corporation like General Motors."

What an idiot!

This is the same Larry Johnson who is urging present CIA agents to break the law in an effort to discredit Bush. This is the same Larry Johnson who hasn't worked for the CIA in over 15 years. This is the same Larry Johnson who pretends to be a Republican to give Chuck Schumer some non-partisan cover for Schumer's partisan attempts to discredit the White House.

It would be great if he was being paid by the DNC. What did Howard Dean know, and when did he know it?

But it seems obvious to me that the ultimate target of VIPS activities is Bush himself. They want to accuse him of cooking the evidence to get him impeached.

I read this guys history somewhere, so I'm trying to find out where it was to post a link....

This guy was a building contractor and working on a building somewhere the US was very interested in. They offered him a CIA position to see what info they could get out of him. The CIA was using him just to get it, and that's why his CIA job only lasted a few years.
That could explain his over bragging about being a 007 "really cool dude". It was the biggest thing that ever happened to him.

I'll keep searching, but if any FReepers already have this info book marked, could you FReep mail me? Thanks.

I wonder why so many of these government civil service types have to lie and say that they're Republicans.

Because democrats aren't reliable. They lie too much. Would you trust a democrat?

Larry Johnson is the poor man's Joe Wilson, and the blubberphobic's Michael Moore. If you can't afford to have Joe speak at your rubber chicken dinner, Larry is available. If you need some Bushbashing Trilateral Commission Conspiracy-theorizin' done but can't provide all the food on Michael Moore's contract rider, call Lar!

There's more info on Larry Johnson in the FR thread below that deals with his group, VIPS, trying to get current CIA agents to break secrecy.
