Well, it happened friday (July 22nd)when my life came to a sudden stop with me walking on stage at the Atlanta Civic Center with the President of the United States. Just writing this it seems to have been a very sureal moment...I'm having difficulty remembering it all.
For some reason I was selected from the state of Georgia to represent seniors and discuss SS reform. It started two weeks ago with repeated phone calls from the WH asking me questions. Funny thing..the first call came in and when I saw it was "unknown caller" I just let the machine pick up. Imagine my shock when they said it was the WH liason office calling for me. Needless to say I thought it was a joke.
Being a 70 yr old senior way past her days of being on stage (in plays)I found it totally exciting...scary...total intimidating and all the other things one can think of.
But I can tell you that President Bush and his Mother were most gracious and I came away with even more appreciation of the tremendous job he has before him every day. His kindness toward a family who had lost a son in Iraq..his writing a special note for a friend of mine whose Mom is very ill are just two examples of what I found to be his most enduring qualities. We can spend hours debating policies butI believe he truly cares about people. I mentioned what our subdivision does for returning service men and he thanked me for taking the time to think of our military.
We will be going around the state talking to other seniors to enlist their help in getting start on SS reform. Will need some help with why people are so adamant against any changes.
I'm still walking on clouds and since this is my first post if I goofed please be kind and show me the way!
You guys have to come and see this lady's great story, and also take a look at her post # 55. I'm sure you'll enjoy both.
One more thing. In case you didn't see the thread on the End of AMT, I think the Fair Tax Act could be combined with SS reform to provide the keys to a solution. First, the Fair Tax would support SS with a much broader tax base than just employees/employment. Second, the Fair Tax would be the foundation for more robust economic growth, which is essential to make SS sound. Best to you.
I totally agree with you and in hindsight I wish I had been able to combine the Fair Tax along with SS reform. Have been a fan of the Fair Tax for many years and Congressman Linder is looking for all the help he can get to get this out to everyone. Once people learn the facts of his proposal then they are for it......problem is the typical "don't change" mentality that exists in this country.
Of course, that only comes from the opposition when it isn't something they are proposing. With SS reform I can never get a clear cut reason why they oppose it other than the rhetoric of "don't touch my money" etc. If I were a lot younger I think I'd be one of those who heckles back at the protesters and tell them to "get a life" and work so they too can contribute to SS. Trust me...most of the hecklers I saw on Friday seemed to be the "hired" type and had no clue what SS reform is all about.
When all they can do is throw out obscenities I have to question their intelligence in deciding to "oppose" SS reform.
Fairtaxers are EVERYWHERE!
Congratulations!
Thanks for the ping, n. GH was that you I saw in the pink jumpsuit with black hair? I was sure that was a picture of you asking the President about the fair tax. Thaks for sharing your experience with us.
Yes that was me in the pink pantsuit shaking and stammering ......next time I'll think twice before agreeing to do anything like this!!
As much as I'm for SS reform and will work for it I also have just as much fevor for seeing the Fair Tax get instituted. Change seems hard for so many people and yet there is no doubt we need it here. Congressman Linder is counting on word of mouth to get the word out about Fair Tax.
He and Neal Boortz will be touring the country promoting their Fair Tax book and for those not familiar with everything the fair tax offers this is a good read.
Ya' dun guud, grannyheart2000!! Don't let the naysayers get you down - just keep supporting the President (and the FairTax, of course).
Passing the FairTax will give him another bit of ammunition to help reform S/S & M/C ... and I'm sure he knows that. Next time you bump into him, say "howdy" from all of us.
