Anyone who hasn't learned that lesson from Al Qaeda's recent attacks in Egypt, Syria, Turkey, and the Phillipines isn't going to learn it from an attack on the Vatican, either.

I don't doubt you, but the Vatican would be a horrible target.
The Vatican has zero soldiers in Iraq and officially opposed the Iraq war. Hitting them might give some people the wacky idea that you can't appease a terrorist and that the best way to defeat them is to hunt down and destroy the terrorists wherever they are.
The Pope didn't condemn Islamic terrorist attacks against Israel, and the Israeli's are outraged. Maybe the Pope thinks he'll head off an attack on the Vatican by appeasing Muslims. A fool's game.
