Spain bans smoking in countryside to curb fire risk

MADRID (Reuters) - Spaniards are no longer allowed to smoke as they take a Sunday stroll in the woods, under new government rules aimed at curbing the risk of fires such as a recent one in which 11 firefighters died.

Lighting fires in open spaces is banned nationwide until November, by when the country's severe drought may have eased.

Friday's law, which comes into force immediately, emphasizes the danger of barbecues at picnic places, thought to be the cause of the fatal blaze in Guadalajara, and prohibits farmers from burning stubble, for example.

Just under 30 percent of Spaniards over 16 smoke daily and no-smoking rules in stations and other public places are widely flouted. The Environment Ministry did not explain how its ban on smoking in the countryside would be enforced.

I am generally against tobocco nazis, but this makes sense.

I have a ski house/cabin near Ruidosso, NM, and we are routinely under no-smoking, no-outdoor cooking, etc. bans due to drought/fire hazards.

I move the cigar to the screened porch.

They need to ban Bic lighters and also ticket anyone in possession of two sticks.

I guess they take that old saying to heart. You know, "Where there's smoking, there's fire."

Once again, a few bad apples -- the ones who can't be trusted to put out their butts before flinging them (we've all seen 'em) -- spoil it for everyone.

Oh, well. Such is life in Spain. Coming soon to a jurisdiction near you.
