Citizen Jrnl. ^ | July 25, 2005 | Jayson Blair

Journalists, if they want privilege under the laws of the United States, have an ethical responsibility get across the information they want, but not get anyone killed, blow the covers of agents or ruin operations. If they reach an impasse with the government, they as journalists have to be responsible enough to decide whether the value information that they are putting out there outweighs the potential damage. Many journalists might hate me, but that’s right out Poynter Institute for Media Studies ethical playbook. That's journalistic ethics. Not that I should be giving a lecture on it. One thing worth noting is that if journalists have opened themselves up for me to give lectures on ethics, they are really in trouble.

It's fair enough to ask whether we should care what JB says about anything (not to mention whether someone should look at those sources) but I think he makes a good point, one that few current reporters would be willing to make. Food for thought, at a minimum.

He's right on that point.

Ummm, hi, Mr. Blair?

In case you hadn't noticed, your fifteen minutes are over.

Now kindly sit down and shut up.

Yeah, but who really wrote this? I might open the Des Moines Register and find it was copied verbatim!

You're right. It IS about ethics, which means he could never have written it. Silly me.

wait a second - im as conservative as most on here but isnt there something to knowing what a NYT insider knows about its culture, etc. I don't value Blair's opinion but i value his perspective.

no, i disagree.

when anyone deliberately lies in a profession, they're out.

say a lawyer or a police officer lies before a court, or, in public.

they no longer have public trust.

how long would they have a professional career?

why would you want journalists to be any different?

Did this idiot put down his crack pipe and leave his apartment long enough to actually research this piece? Were the sources his crack dealer, or the crazed conspiracy theorist next door?

This is a typical liberal reporter that got caught in the act. Surely, you have to realize how many others did the same as he and didn't/haven't been caught as perveyors of journalistic fraud.

Linda Foley, national president of The Newspaper Guild, has picked up right where Eason Jordan left off accusing US soliders of targeting newsmen.
