'Al-Qaeda cannot orchestrate global terrorism from Pak': Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf
Outlook India ^ | JULY 25 ,2005

Posted on 07/25/2005 7:08:50 AM PDT by Gengis Khan

Pakistan President Pervez Musharrf today said al-Qaeda's command and communication system has been eliminated, and that the network could not have orchestrated terrorist attacks in London, Egypt or elsewhere from Pakistan.

President Pervez Musharraf's remarks followed reports that Egyptian police are looking for six Pakistanis as the probe widens into the deadly weekend bombings in Egypt's resort town of Sharm el-Sheik.

Musharraf told journalists in the eastern city of Lahore that al-Qaeda "sanctuaries" in Pakistan's rugged tribal regions have been overrun, and that security forces have captured 700 of its fighters.

However, Musharraf said small groups of al-Qaida militants might still be hiding in the country's rugged North and South Waziristan tribal regions, bordering Afghanistan. Military experts believe Osama bin Laden could be hiding in the area.

"We have shattered and eliminated their command system there," Musharraf said. "We attack them when we see them in the mountains." He said al-qaeda's communication system has been reduced to a "courier network," and a message now takes two months to move up or down the network's hierarchy.

"Is it possible in this situation that an al-qaeda man sitting here, no matter who he is, may control things in London, Sharm el-Sheik, Istanbul or Africa? This is absolutely wrong," he said.

I just don't take much comfort in Musharrafs' reassurance. He has a habit of glossing over things that don't make him look good. The Pakistani souq mentality is always there. (souq=marketplace. The mentality requires the merchant to tell the customer whatever he has to in order to make the sale.)

Re #5

It is more likely that Osama hangs out near the rugged area of China just across Pakistan, and occasionally ventures out. Anyway, that is my amateur speculation.

Pfffffft! Musharraf is scared to death of the tribal leaders and leaves them alone to do as they will. If they support the Taliban and al-Qaeda, well, he's done all he can. He's more interested in self-preservation and his new-found ally status with the Great and Powerful America.

Many parts of Pakistan are a land and a law unto themselves, and there is absolutely nothing he is willing to do about it. Perhaps it's more accurate to say he does what he can to pacify the U.S. demands without ticking off the various Pashtun tribal chiefs. It's a tough balancing act, but at least he's still alive, eh?

I think Musharraf has valuable knowledge on the Al Qaeda Network in Pakistan, and at least doing the best but also at the least in a passive manner to maintain his power while resisting foreign pressure. However, I still disagree that about the claims of network disconnected by foreign networks. there has been reports about the connections with Iran, which Internet cable leading into areas for use by Al Qaida elements.

Funny!!! You laughing, Dog?

Mush has taken that old American sales truism to heart;

Sincerity is everything, once you can fake that, you've got it made.

I take heart that some of the TV fluffernutters are taking to calling these connections - the Pakistan Problem.

Well, Mush will pull another one of his vaunted lives out of his helmet, simulataneouly balancing on that much touted tightrope, proclaiming loudly his ignorance of all the jihadi acts emanating out of Pakistan on HIS watch.

Never knew of a military dictator who was so clueless about what his own Military Intelligence and Covert Services are upto.

3 Billion plus, f-16's, major nonNATO ally, broadband madarrsa connections to train better educated jihadis, cruise missiles......

Damn, those Pakis are good.

Gets tedious after a while, doesn't it.

Despite the documented historical record, we persist in our grand illusions that the leopard actually changes his spots.

Mush's mindset throughout his life has been on being more ProPakistan than the Punjabis dominating the military - being an immigrant from India, he had to prove his bonafides by being more antiIndian than others.

The anti Indian zeitgeist in the Pak establishment, made them happy when Osama et all (the International Islamic Front - made up of many Paki groups along with AQTalib) made Kashmir the first central focus of their post Afghani machinations.

Hell, A PIA plane loaded with a nuke crashing into Manhattan would be passed of as a "rogue" operation.

"Damn, those Pakis are good."

Hats off to those Pakis.
THEY break every law in the book and THEY get heavily rewarded for it, THEY get the "non-NATO ally" status, THEY are granted the title of "front running ally", THEY get the billions of dollars of aid and weaponry.
Wish India had been a fraction as smart as those Pakis we would have secured a UN seat for ourselves by now.

I guess Musharaff knows that most of the orders go through Iran.

In 1949, Nehru was offered China's seat after Mao took over; the quid pro quo being joining the Baghdad Pact, IIRC. He turned it down.
