Saying no to volunteer guards - A JOB FOR PROS -- WHO NEED MORE FEDERAL SUPPORT
MercuryNews ^

Homeland Security, which oversees the Border Patrol, certainly doesn't need to complicate its already difficult mission by inviting in legions of outsiders. Now, if only the agency could persuade President Bush and Congress to beef up the Border Patrol and establish a system of work visas, accompanied by employer sanctions, for Mexicans who would qualify to come here and for some here already. Bringing illegal immigration to an end will not be solved without both actions.
Divisions within the Republican Party over immigration have quashed immigration reforms. Until President Bush moves to break the stalemate, the Minuteman movement and tensions over illegal immigration will spread.

That is part of the problem - the GOP continues to deny it even exists.
A recipe for disaster in 2006.

And if your plane is hijacked, please leave fighting the hijackers to the professional air marshal. Passengers should stay in their seats, call friends and family to say goodbye, and pray (last suggestions removed at direction of the ACLU, since aircraft security has been federalized prayer has been outlawed).

I wish the minute men would put out a call for 10,000 volunteers to protect our southern border. Let's at least see if the people have any serious interest in protecting their country

President Bush faces a major rebellion within his own party if he follows through on a promise to push legislation that would offer millions of illegal immigrants a path to U.S. citizenship. Almost no issue divides Republicans as deeply.

IMO letting concerned citizens join an auxiliary to the Border Guards is a good idea. It lets the citizen see what these people do throughout the days they are patrolling the border. It also sends a message to the BP that people appreciate their efforts to patrol our borders.
Could it be that the upper echelon of the BP and Homeland Security do not want to see how inept their organizations are at protecting the borders? The American citizens are not the outsiders, the illegal aliens are though.

The idea of using civilians to do the jobs the federals are paid to do, but will not do, is a dangerous suggestion.
Never screw with public employee unions, especially the ones that are not performing.
Someone is going to be looking for a new job by Friday.

There is a huge battle going on within the hierarchy of the border patrol and ICE.
Many within want to take care of the problem, but the stalemate at the top is creating extreme tensions by refusing to release the necessary effort to repair the border crisis.
It will get much worse before it gets better.

A National Guard Border Patrol system would be perfect.
2-3 week training boot camp, one weekend every two months and 2-3 weeks a year on location.
Hundreds of thousands of patriotic Americans would sign up today.

We are paying top dollar for people who are not doing their jobs. The boarders are essentially wide open till someone takes out a whole city in one flash, if not a dozen cities.
It is as bad as it can get, we just wait now.

"A National Guard Border Patrol system would be perfect."
=============================
The National Guard is the obvious instrument in dealing with this crisis.
And yes, if it was used as intended (to protect United States borders from foreign invasions), the National Guard recruiting offices in every county of the country would have lines backed up for miles waiting to join.

There's a logjam at the top of the DHS that refuses to acknowledge that they need the help of a dedicated civilian auxiliary.

It is obvious that Bush wants a stalemate. He is promoting 3 or more million illegals to jump the border each year, so he accomplishes what he wants with NO legislation at all. Not a shot fired.

Homeland Security, which oversees the Border Patrol, certainly doesn't need to complicate its already difficult mission by inviting in legions of outsiders I wonder if the author understands just how rediculous and ironic this statement sounds.
The people WHO EMPLOY Homeland Security are not the outsiders. That's right, the citizens are the employers here...not the servants or the underlings. Some of those employers want to do a legal, hands-on assessment and to get involved helping their employees.
The legions of outsiders are the ones crossing the border every day.
