China: "Let's Go Get Fish!" Crowds Swarming After a Dam Released Water due to Flood

(source: www.stardaily.com.cn)

While continued torrential rains creating tens of millions of refugees in China, Beijing Yu-le-xin-bao(Star Daily) reported on July 25th that hundreds of people converged to  scoop a school of fish swept down by water when a dam opened its flood gates to release rising water, creating a huge spectacle.

According to the report, 18 flood gates were open beginning at 1:45am on July 24th, when the heavy downpour on 23rd raised the water level at the dam. About 300 hundred people turned up to catch fish swept down (by the released water.)

The local media divided the crowds into four groups:

(1) The first group are the ones who were catching fish closest to the flood gates. They are mostly young strong men who could hold out in a chest-deep water.

(2) The second group are the one who hung out in ankle-deep water. They are mainly middle-aged.

(3) The third group are the ones between two groups above. They were women and pupils.

(4) The last group are the ones who came out in family groups. They scooped fish who managed to evade the first three groups.

When the flood gates closed around 5pm, a market was formed at the spot wheeze 3~6 fish were sold for 10 yuans (approx. 1.25 dollars.) A majority of fish caught was salmon, but the rest included carp, or trout.

The dam operator said, "the fish are from a fish-farm on the other side of dam. Every year, if flood raises the water level to force the release of water, we notify the company which operates the farm."

Re #4

I wonder how much of their catch is eaten afterwards? I hear that, in U.S., people ended up catching more than they can consume, when they go out fishing.

Somebody told me a story that he went out fishing with others and ended so many that his entire family had fish dinners of various kinds for a month, but there were still more left. Some of them were in his fridge so long that he had to eventually dump them in a trash can.

Fishin' is fishin' the world over.

"Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him to fish, he will call in sick to work, get his buddies and drink beer all day."

I can attest to that. My friend gave me about 10 lbs of salmon. I was able to eat 8 lbs but the rest got freezer burned.

We have caught a poop load of catfish on trotlines before. Had a big ole fish fry for friends. One time we caught about 35-40 nice ones about 5-10 lbs each.

I once had a neighbor who would stay in his camper for a whole month in Alaska during the summer. All he did was to catch salmon during the day and smoke and can them at night. Sounds like a blast.

Of course, I once caught a 120 lb. Halibut in Alaska. Had a big party and still couldn't finish all the meat.
