The company that I work for has a joint venture company in China and what you say is quite true about what the Chinese wanted 15 years ago. I can remember the General Manager at the Company in China (a China National) his greatest ambition in life was to have a car. I wonder what it is today.
It is strange though in some ways they have jumped forward massively yet there are still some areas even not far from major cities that still appear like something out of a Dickens novel.
Also there is still a lot of issues regarding quality of raw material what is supposedly a type and grade of steel often is more like putty than steel.
