When I lived in San Diego (Mira Mesa), I frequently stopped at the La Salsa near Black Mountain and Mira Mesa Blvd. I knew all the staff by name. One day they started speaking Spanish instead of English. I returned the favor by ordering in Welsh. The young lady looked very perplexed. I suggested that since we both speak English, it would be easier to work that way. If she speaks Spanish to me, I'll reply in Welsh. It's not a matter of not understanding the language, just a matter of being polite.
