The uncomfortable reality, as Andrew Sum sees it, is that there's a direct link between the steep national decline in teen employment rates and the growing practice of businesses hiring illegal immigrants and paying them off the books.
Sum is the director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University and lead author of a widely cited nationwide study projecting teen employment will continue to fall, with a drop to 36.7 percent this summer from 45 percent in 2000. That puts it at or near its lowest level since the data series began in 1948, despite a strengthening economy and improving overall labor market.
"The immigrant increase in employment is overwhelming. Every net new job created is taken by an immigrant. I know that's shocking, but that's the truth," Sum said offering his sober assessment. "It happened in Massachusetts and New York in the 1990s, and now its happening in the country as a whole."
That's not to say the sole reason teens are getting squeezed out is that businesses are breaking the rules, going underground and hiring unskilled immigrant labor.
It's always been the case that some high school kids might not get work because they are lazy, lack initiative, face racism, need contacts, don't have a car or can afford to do something else because they have rich parents.
'snip'
But what has Sum particularly intrigued and concerned is the undeniable evidence that more American businesses are opting to expand profits and remain competitive by hiring low-cost undocumented workers instead of paying taxes, workers' compensation and even rudimentary health benefits for legal workers. "I haven't seen anything like this in 25 years," Sum said.

The rural kids in our area and college kids are out of luck the illegals have taken the summer canning factory jobs..the field work, and the corn detassling jobs from the local high school kids..
When you Viva La Raza you screw America
And what color may you be, Mr-"oh-such-a-hard-worker?"
They need to be turned in everywhere and fined for that.
Useless trivia: Not sure what part of cornbelt you're in, but did you know Cindy Crawford's first job was as a corn detassler for DeKalb?
See my post #38. I have been doing construction for 19 years and started at the bottom as a laborer and worked my way up. We have used a workers Temp service in the past few years and never ever once have I seen or received a guy under 30 years old. They know how to work and unfortunately have screwed up by getting DUI's or have some other problems but they show up on time and put in a good days work for crap wages.
When I was in college, it wasn't that hard to find part-time work. As the parent of a college kid, I'll tell you that there are very few part-time grunt jobs available. Employers want full-time only for even minimum-wage jobs that, in our city, used to go part-time to college kids and teenagers.
How many people do you employ? I can personally attest to the fact that the average teenager is worthless in manual labor...pussies one and all...
I'll second this. I use to do construction saw the same thing. And even if you do get them, they are unreliable as heck in most cases. They are always looking for some excuse to not be at work. The facts are quite different that what is being spewed out in this story.
I admire those brave kids. It's outrageous to think that some of them might come home to find that they can't get a job because some greedy employer is hiring illegal aliens instead of Americans.
Talk about your sterotyping.
P.S. It's you're, not your. Maybe some of those kids are better spellers than you.
AWWWWWW, don't be so hard on the guy - everyone knows you need 2 white guys and 3 black guys on any contruction site to watch the 2 Hispanic guys digging the ditches....
I'm not in construction, but I'll tell ya what, I prefer the older worker to the younger ones who are more concerned with putting on their make-up, doing their hair & flirting than they are with doing their work.
Here in the desert Sign Twirlers wanted, starting at $10.00. For those that haven't seen this phenomenon, they hire kids to stand on corners and twirl big arrow type signs, advertising new housing or Pizza.

Oh really. Ever apply at any Grocery stores? I use to work a second job at a major grocery chain. We NEVER had enough cashiers. All of our people are part time except for management or department heads. Virtually all the convience stores I go by everyday have "help wanted" signs up. Funny thing too. All of these jobs pay several dollars OVER minimum wage to START.
And they try to rationalize it by revising history.
You know, imagining what exceptional, hard working, teens they were. Nobody screwed off when they were teens, and if they did, it shore weren't them, dad gummit. LOL.
OH yeah, we got those here too - dressed up in Mariachi whites & shaking maracas with signs on their front & backs. It's fun, but man it must be misery when it's hot out there!
The American teenagers in my county are worthless pussies...who go running to mama the moment they break a sweat or pop a blister...ACCEPT THE FACTS
Every time one of these articles blaming 'illegal aliens' for teen unemployment pops up its the same old crap. The hispanics are not stealing the work from the teens...the hispanics are doing the work the pussies won't do...
I KNOW...I HAVE EMPLOYED HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF BOTH OVER 25 YEARS...
An just to be crystal clear...all of my hispanics (Guatamalens) are bonafide legal and documented...so don't even go there...
"Teens don't just work for gas money. There are many who must pay their way through college -- or would like to."
Amen to what you said about paying through college. I've recently turned twenty-two and I'm still stuck at the same darn job for the past two years since most places want someone who is bilingual or has a bachelor's degree to work in freakin' data entry, entry level! As for college, I've barely been able to afford even one class per semester. Places that say they will train the "Right person" are always hiring people with previous experience! It frustrates me to no end since I am an apt learner and always willing to work hard!
