Cuba's longtime communist leader said he was proud to be the friend of Elian Gonzalez, now 11, who graduated this week from Grade 6.

"I have the privilege to be his friend," Castro said in speech that was published in Cuban media Friday, a day after the leader attended Elian's graduation ceremony.

Castro is not going to use Elian for propaganda, right?

What good is it to know how to read in a country where the government decides what you are allowed to read?

And where you are not allowed to read the bible or anything about Jesus, but are allowed to practice Santeria?

What was done to Elian shouldn't have happened to anybody, least of all to someone whose mother died so that he could be free in America.

Aw, what a touching moment. There's nothing quite like being used as the propaganda tool of a Stalinist dictatorship.

I'm sure liberals will insist that grinding poverty and political oppression are what every kid needs.

Ugh, that is sick. Fidel Castro is one of the foremost people in the world where I would just give almost anything to get 15 minutes in the woodshed with me holding a 2x4. Well, it looks like Elian will have to join his comrades in the sugar fields, I have an old National Georgraphic article on Cuba from 1977 where IIRC, once you hit grade 7 (junior high), you are expected to do some labor in the sugar cane fields and/or something similar. I hope Elian is just playing along as best as he can until Castro kicks the bucket.

Elian Gonzalez, now 11, graduated this week from Grade 6.

In five or six years he'll be old enough to escape Castro's paradise.

Where was Janet Reno sitting?

She was on one of the sex tourist excursions checking out the 12-15 year old females.

Well, some of us kept trying to explain to the naive, that in Cuba, Castro is Elian's "Father" and that is to whom he is being delivered to on a silver platter by Clinton.

His father was there...in the audience...you can bet he's living quite well compared to other Cubans.

Saw this on the news last night. Elian gave a well rehearsed speech. I didn't see him smile once.

I wasn't here, but can I assume that the Elian threads on FR were as "passionate" on both sides as in Shaivo or more properly, the current Tancredo divisions amongst us?

Laugh whilst you can, Fidel.

The devil has been heating a frying pan for you for many years. It should be mighty hot by now.
