At the least all the killing and mayhem should pit good guys against bad guys.

First of all, the world isn't black-and-white, there's almost always shades of grey. Secondly, have you ever played GTA? While you are free to kill all the cops you want, the only cops you are required to kill are corrupt and evil cops in the first place. I could definitely argue that GTA pits good guys against bad guys.

Nope, not a game player and not generally a prude. It just seems that having fun killing the good guys is not a good thing for kids to be doing especially in today's social climate. I can understand if the bad guys are controlled by the game and good guys get killed. That's life, the same as true war. But to have a player trying to kill the good guys is not an appropriate exercise.
