Tom Tancredo Eyes White House Run
SFGate ^

Tom Tancredo has been called a one-trick pony of a politician, a man out of step with his party, a bigot. The Republican congressman vehemently opposes illegal immigration, and he created an uproar last week when he talked about nuking Muslim holy sites.
"Unless I misread the political tea leaves, there is a great deal of support for what I say," Tancredo said.
Experts say Tancredo has no chance at the White House, but like Ross Perot's campaign on a balanced budget in 1992, he has found an issue that could force other Republicans to treat immigration as a major issue.

Correction;
"Throckmorton was staunchly anti-immigration".
Should be;
Throckmorton was staunchly anti-illegal immigration.

That's what the war in Iarq was about. Similar success in Afghanistan and Lebanon are ocurring. There's still a long way to go.
I hope you'll forgive my skepticism, but a few questions on point:
1. Will we ever have the guts to use the Presidential bully pulpit to ask Saudi Arabia to guarantee religious freedom in its own back yard? Why didn't you include the Saudis along with Syria, by the way?
2. Will we stop all aid to rogue Muslim states until they guarantee civil rights?
3. Will we retain (or take) possession of Iraqi oil reserves in payment for our civilizing mission and not return them until we confirm they have succeeded in their own westernization? (Or do we give them back to the next strong man who can only rule Muslims by tyranizing them, ala Turkey?)
4. Will we _ever_ admit that an unguarded border is far more dangerous than Osama hiding among the Afghani boulders?

As far as immigration goes, I don't even like legal immigration except to maintain our current population in numbers. Tancredo, IMPV, doesn't have the political acumen to get elected and to enforce current immigration laws. I don't think he can get 51% of the vote. I like Tancredo fine as he is. He is a good sabre rattler and says things others are either skeered to say or can't say for a variety of reasons ...some good...some weak..
and I agree with you completely above....
One can like Tancredo and agree with your post...at least in my opinion.

I hope you'll forgive my skepticism, but a few questions on point: Those are good question. No need to apologize.
1. Will we ever have the guts to use the Presidential bully pulpit to ask Saudi Arabia to guarantee religious freedom in its own back yard? Why didn't you include the Saudis along with Syria, by the way?
We gave Saudi Arabia a list of Al Qaeda that we wanted them to remove. Saudi Arabai recently has completed that list. So now we give them another list of lesser terrorists. They say they will take care of it. Saudi Arabia was extremely helpful when we invaded Iraq. I can give you links where our generals quoted extremely important things that they did during the invasion to help us out. As far as freedom in Saudi Arabia, with all of its Whahabis, I don't think that at this point in time, it's a good idea.
2. Will we stop all aid to rogue Muslim states until they guarantee civil rights?
At this point in time, no. I'm not flaming you but this line of question sounds odd for somebody who supports Tancredo's statement about going nuclear on Mecca.
4. Will we _ever_ admit that an unguarded border is far more dangerous than Osama hiding among the Afghani boulders?
I believe that our current policy is to work with the countries of Central America so that we are able to have CBP and CIA agents at all points of air and sea entry in Central America.
Gotta go.

I think DeLay can handle himself fine.
But I'm sure he appreciates your looking out for him.

Tancredo AFAIK is a pretty much a standard conservative. But I think it is most certainly possible to get quite a lot of ground using one issue as the centerpiece of your campaign.
Look at McCain, he managed to get pretty far based on his whole campaign finance reform agenda, in spite of the big donors all lining up behind Bush. McCain likely would have won the nomination had his credentials as a conservative not been questioned, and had he not mismanaged his campaign as he did after New Hampshire.
He is also a popular Congressman from what is increasingly becoming a Swing State, so he has that going for him.

And doesn't appreciate your hero tancredo running to the liberal media to backstab him.
But what the hey you wardaddy, you like tancredo the way he is, a backstabber towards someone in the trumped up liberal democrat and media gauntlet.

Tancredo is a mouthy, publicity-seeking fool. His only virtue is that he keeps Ron Paul's nonsense off of the FR radar.

Tancredo's said before that if he runs, it'll be to force the other candidates' hands on illegal immigration, rather than running to actually become the nominee and win. That is, quite possibly, the stupidest thing I have ever heard. The other candidates will run so far away from Tancredo, so fast, that none of them will run on an anti-illegals ticket.

Let me know when you have time to answer the questions, because I think what you're avoiding is the central issue: Muslim states are intrisicly rogue entities. If it's impossible for a Wahabbi state to consider freedom of religion and expression, you have to admit that we have an implacable foe to our way of life, and they have to be treated as such. This "religion of peace" rhetoric is so clearly a lie, I think, that it makes it nearly impossible for our soldiers to do their job. I know, because I had a friend educating Marines on the nature of Islam, and he was asked to give the politically correct version of the story. He refused. He told the Marines he wasn't going to lie to American soldiers about the nature of their enemy. He was asked to leave. As long as our politicians are in denial, we will be at peril. (Like that one about central America cooperating with us on abducting terrorists; that's a good one.)

Speaking to the better nature of non-violent Muslims, while waging a WOT is hardly Chamberlainesqe. And upholding the right to religious freedoms (which does not include terrorism and murder), is hardly un-American. In fact, I believe the prez pledged an oath to uphold such freedom.
You and I might differ with this president on approaches, procedures, and funding of borders, but that hardly makes him a traitor to his country. Besides, I'm not much for President Hillary or Kerry or any other "D" as CIC.

"How could Tancredo's negatives possibly be any worse than Hillary's? If Tancredo is pro-life, it would be nice having a real Republican after a semi-Republican."
I've actually seen a left-wing columnist bashing Hillary lately. Pigs are flying.

I don't know what you are mumbling. When you say Tancredo can't attract enough voters to win, it implies that you have someone in mind who would be more successful at attracting voters.
When asked who you had in mind, you came up with George W. Bush...who is ineligible to run for President in '08.
