A small town in Indiana and a brief filed saying that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided are entirely positive signs on first inspection, but the second reveals only a leaning and not a falling off on one side or the other. This is, of course, by White House design for the public understanding of Judge Roberts. Bush has exhibited his recurrent traits and examining G.W. Bush right now is the only way to know what really is in the heart of Judge Roberts.
Roberts is deliberately without much record. He is deliberately congenial and with friends all around. He is deliberately professionally competent, hard to make controversial fine. I say "deliberately" on Bush's part it is unknown if Judge Roberts has achieved his stealth status by his own design or by chance. Seemingly driven, popular success would encourage an individual to remain somewhat vanilla, but great strategists also sometimes hold their tongue and bide their time. We don't know, and that's the point.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, the attack on Ann Coulter on this Board was VICIOUS, REPREHENSIBLE AND DISGRACEFUL.
I read through 450 of the some 700+ posts relative to Ann Coulters article on the Roberts nomination. Although, like any one else, Ann deserves to have her views scrutinized and criticized on this Board, its unconscionable that so many have denigrated her personally.
It is an absolute disgrace that some posters have attacked her for her body shape; and, her marital status; and, her facial features; and, her purported drinking habits; and imputed uninformed pseudo- psychoanalysis in this vicious ad hominem attack. If ANYONE in the conservative movement didnt deserve such hypocritical treatment from her own, it is Ann Coulter.
Im relatively new to the Board, but I remember Ann and Drudge participating in a rally telecast on CSPAN when Free Republic was in its infancy. She was there to support this Board, and has continually been one of the staunchest supporters of this Board. I recall her saying that, when she traveled and was feeling low, she logged on to Free Republic for sustenance. I remember at the rally, when she spoke to Freepers, she said I love you guys.
Without argument, she has been on the front lines in the battle against liberalism. Unlike those who attack her personally today from the safety and anonymity of their keyboards, she places herself physically in harms way every time she spreads the conservative philosophy at a university. We all know she is vulnerable to personal attack, and we have seen punks try to silence her by confronting her on stage and throwing pies in her face. What we witness on this Board today is FAR WORSE than a cream pie; its a vicious slap in the face. Its an unmitigated abomination.
We all know that when the administration comes under assault, suddenly, the Board is overwhelmed with hatchet men. But the hatchet job done on Ann Coulter today was a Black Day for Free Republic. We attacked one of our most ardent supporters; we mugged the soul of the Board.
Those who engaged in this character assassination should be ashamed, but I know they are not. Ann Coulter is not, and should not be, above criticism as to her views- but these ad hominian attacks by keyboard assassins is dastardly and the pinnacle of ingratitude.
Ann fearlessly endures the attacks of liberals, and she does so in support of the causes that we hold dear. I dont always agree with her, but God, I admire her courage. I couldnt do what she does, and I am so much in her debt for doing for me that which I have no capacity to perform. God hope she has the good sense not to read the Board today- because Im certain that with all she has endured on our behalf, this had to be the greatest betrayal of all.
To those assassins involved, Et Tu, Freepers?
And you are???
Why he is Sirthomas
We calls 'em as we sees 'em.
What, not even the obligatory picture for her slavish fawning fans?
But the idea that just because people aren't tossing spears at each other over this nomination it's the beginning of the end is sheer lunacy. When there's no reason to fight, why fight?
We can fight plenty when and if the judge does something deserving of it. The tendency to look for fights where there is no reason for one--oh my, some people like this guy! how shocking!--is a bit childish.
And let's be very honest here: I love Coulter, but to attack others for attacking a woman who routinely picks on people's physical characteristics? THAT, my friend, is the hypocritical treatment. Ann's a big girl; she can take it, or she should be able to, because she dishes it out plenty.
You'd think he would have known the RULE.
But then he hasn't been here vey long.
I think Ann was way off on her criticism. Why is that? Well because for a change Joe Farah more or less mirrors what she said.
no the real reason is that I think this nomination and the person nominated will end up being INFINITELY more conservative than O'Connor was. IF he was the one replacing Rehnquist I would say no, but he isn't.
You DO want to get your candidates, preferably the easy ones confirmed as quickly and without the political capital as soon as possible. Save the ammo for when Rehnquist retires around XMAS time.....
MORE IMPORTANTLY, the attack on Ann Coulter on this Board was VICIOUS, REPREHENSIBLE AND DISGRACEFUL.
Conservatives always destroy each other.
That's why we'll never prevail for long.
It's really too bad.
I like Ann. I like her mind and her daring.
Sometimes she goes too far.
But in this case, she was sounding an alarm that MAY turn out to have been prescient.
I agree with you, don't like the personal attacks.
But that's FR!
I happen to agree with you. Ann was right to shoot from the hip. She's aiming at the spinelessness of the Republican Party today.
ahem...........rules you know.....PICTURES !
Relatively new? Is that like relative humidity? A pissing contest?
Politically, W's biggest problem is keeping his base walking precincts in 2006. The Club of 200 encomiums are as directed at these folks as at the rats. And Bush has won that battle for the time being. Folks still trust Bush enough to give him the benefit of the doubt. And, it's unlikely Roberts can reveal himself as yet another R judicial disaster before 2006. If he does, the R's lose the Senate in 2006--moderates don't walk precincts.
I just have no idea whether this is a great nomination or a disaster . . . it's probably something in-between.
I love Coulter but she is not the soul of the forum.
Maybe 4 years ago but not now.
Contrary the the way the left views us, FR is actually fairly moderate...the hyperbole notwithstanding.
It's sure more moderate than when I joined. (or maybe I was..lol)
...but ...it could be Clown Posse so I'm not complaining.
(my apologies to the few decent CPers)
I guess I read a different column from the one others seem to have read.
In the column I read, Coulter just pointed out that nothing much was known about Roberts. That he had no clear track record, or any record of public utterances or writings to indicate that he was a conservative (constuctionsist, etc.)
She noted that many (actually every) time a Republican I has picked someone they thought would be conservative--but who had no clear record, they had turned out more liberal than had been hoped. (Warren, Souter, for starters.)
I don't see where she is wrong about that. Maybe Bush will be lucky and break the pattern. But what was wrong with pointing it out? What was wrong with suggesting that maybe he should have picked a surefire conservative?
That's what he promised when he was campaigning--both times.
Ann likes to be on the fringe.
She is very entertaining. If she was not attractive
I believe she would not sell the amount of books
she does.
For me it comes down to this.
Who is a better to judge.
Mark Levin or Ann?
but it isn't quite like that in this case.
Besides Souter lied his @$$ off when he was being interviewed for the job.
if he is SLIGHTLY more conservative than O'Connor was, then it is an improvement. But I think he will be better than that.
No one seems to give this President enough credit for his judicial picks. All have been excellent so far. People need to quit being so nervous. I think that is really what it is. When it comes to the courts, Conservatives are a bit snake bitten...
