A portrait of President Bush has led to the filing of a federal lawsuit, after a New York schoolteacher says she was ordered to remove the image from a display of U.S. presidents and ultimately was forced to resign her position.
Jillian Caruso, 26, of Suffolk, N.Y., is suing the Massapequa Union Free School District in Long Island for unspecified damages along with reinstatement to her position at Birch Lane Elementary School.
Caruso claims she was forced to quit by principal Joyce Becker-Seddio, who happens to be the wife of state Assemblyman Frank Seddio, a Brooklyn Democrat.
In her complaint filed in U.S. District Court and published on the Smoking Gun website, Caruso alleges she was retaliated against by Becker-Seddio for her efforts on behalf of the Republican Party, including volunteering at the 2004 GOP convention, and her membership in the Republican National Committee.
Her suit states that in the fall of 2004, Caruso had posted in her classroom various pictures of U.S. presidents, including George W. Bush.
When the principal saw the photo on the wall, she "became outraged and insisted that the picture be removed," according to the complaint.
She also says Becker-Seddio threatened if Caruso did not resign, she would have her probationary appointment rescinded, leading to a poor recommendation that would make it difficult for her to teach again.
Caruso says her rights to free speech and free association were violated, and Becker-Seddio's actions were "performed with malice and without justification or excuse."
On its website, the school says since its inception in 1955, "the Birch Lane community has prided itself on its ability to foster unity and community spirit."
I wish her luck in the lawsuit. Schools should be a place of learning, not of intolerance and indoctrination.
George W. Bush is the President. I don't see any reason why a sitting President's portrait should not be in any classroom.

It always amuses me when leftists compare Bush to Hitler... |
Two words: "Long Island."
I hope she nails them good and gets that principal fired!
As a personnel statement I wish to state that no matter where you stand the POTUS is the POTUS.
I remember the Clinton's crying about the VRWC but never saw a story about a teacher being fired or reprimanded for having BC's picture on their wall!
Jillian sounds like a friend I would like to have : ))
GO JILLIAN : )))
Two words GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS
Four words: Government Schools, Long Island. ;-)
I asked my daughter why and she said that her teacher wouldn't put it up because GWB is not a real President since he stole 2 elections and is causing the world great distress by starting wars so his friend, the VP, could make more money.
I kept my composure & did not grab that fat left wing pony-tailed hippie SOB by the throat for teaching my child that crap.
I went, got the wife and a few more parents who were even more angry than I was. We went down to the Principals office and exploded. Several times.
The next day the teacher had GWB's portrait on the wall and gave a very long lecture about Mr. Bush (only good things) and how he is sorry for putting his personal views in front of "teaching".
Apparently, she had Bush's portrait up with the pictures of a lot of other Presidents, as well. In any place other than NY, it would be big bucks for damages.
Scratch any Demwit... and you'll find a fascist! They are true totalitarians! Thus their love of courts and rule by judicial fiat!!!
I'd be willing to bet that 95 pecent of the young skulls full of mush that attend Birch Lane Elementary School couldn't tell you who the President of the United States is. They probably could tell you which is the best make of condom though.
Let the flaying of the liberal principal-womyn begin! And her little dog, too!
If only more parents would take the same initiative you did.
Thankfully, I only have one child left in public school. Unfortunately, 2 are going to college so it's out of the pan & into the fire.
Even better, my wife works for a major law firm and the Principal knew this. Nothing scares people more than a class action lawsuit by an angry mob of parents.
Jokes on her though, the law firm is almost entirely made up of bleeding heart liberal types (a few exceptions) and would probably have represented the school instead of me!
"I went, got the wife and a few more parents who were even more angry than I was. We went down to the Principals office and exploded. Several times."
GOOD JOB!
I hate when a person's got to explode multiple times, but it is often necessary. I always have to do that when dealing with the telephone guys from Verizon. Nothing else works.
