Group Decries Urban Outfitters T-Shirt

PHILADELPHIA - The Anti-Defamation League has asked retailer Urban Outfitters to stop selling a T-shirt that reads: "New Mexico, Cleaner than Regular Mexico."

"This is saying that the country of Mexico is a dirty place," said Barry Morrison, regional director of the civil rights group. "Dirty can be interpreted figuratively and literally."

The group wants the Philadelphia-based retailer to get rid of all its inventory.

Urban Outfitters did not immediately return calls for comment Friday. The retailer, which targets 18- to 30-year-olds, has run into similar controversy before.

Two years ago, it stopped selling a game called "Ghettopoly" after protests by black civil rights leaders. Last year, it halted sales of a T-shirt that read "Everyone Loves A Jewish Girl," surrounded by dollar signs, after the Anti-Defamation League objected.

A "Voting is for Old People" T-shirt angered pro-voting groups.

Urban Outfitters operates 77 stores in the United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. This year, first-quarter profits rose by 60 percent to $27.4 million, compared to the same period a year ago.

They say that the sense of smell is most closely tied to memory. The scent of raw sewage always brings back fond memories of Mexico.

I was working in public finance at the time. We had a bunch of investment bankers and bond lawyers here from NY, closing a bond issue.

One of the bankers said "Geez, in NY, politicians try to finesse their relatives onto the public payroll. Here, you just call a press conference and announce it. I'll never forget that.

Ya think that's bad.....We have a little ranching community near here where the father is the city manager, the wife and relitives are on the city council, the son and daughters are local chief of the PD and County Sheriff for a small 20 man department of which I'd bet a steak dinner is comprised of cousins and inlaws also......and it's not west of the pecos......:o)

Yes, I know where you are. Just don't let it become another Tulia. No winners in that whole mess. Wasn't your D.A. just sent up on drug / weapons charges?

I'm writing a novel largely set in New Mexico, after it's renamed Nuevo Mexico.

My stand-in for "King Tiger" Tijerina has been elected "gobernador."

Sad that it is, considering the resources of Mexico both natural and human, it should be at least a 2nd world nation. Government corruptness drives them into the dirt.

I re-read the book every few years. Mike Nichols is author, I believe. He's a transplanted Taoseno. The book says it all about NM......funny and sad at the same time.

Urban Poserfitters can't buy this kind of publicity. That's why they do it. And these groups play into their hands. Or maybe they get kickbacks ... i'm starting to wonder.

Anyone with a $2 hanes and ten bucks can go to the local mall and have whatever they want put on a T-shirt. When I lived in Los Angeles, I had a shirt printed with my own version of "Don't ask me for sh*t!". Of course, it didn't work because the shirt was printed in English ... and in "white people words", but it got a few chuckles from those with 4th grade degrees.

Honestly, nobody that lives in the inner-city shops at "urban outfitters". It just sounds cooler than what it really is "suburban outfitters".
